The Sixth International Carp Conference was organized in Szarvas, Hungary, on 31 August–1 September 2023. The conference was attended by 114 participants from 14 countries, representing a range of carp value chain stakeholders. The conference aimed to strengthen the “carp segment” within European aquaculture, improve the image of carp pond aquaculture as common European heritage, and to explore the opportunities for carp within “blue aquaculture”. The conference also aimed to inform carp producers about the latest research findings and European policies. The Sixth International Carp Conference approved the “Szarvas Declaration”. The declaration recognizes the contribution of carp pond aquaculture to sustainable and healthy food production, its role in maintaining and protecting complex socio-economic and environmental values, and that carp farming is a unique segment within European aquaculture. To increase carp production in Europe, policy and decision makers are urged to simplify administrative procedures, provide access to water and suitable locations for aquaculture, and arrange for compensation of damage to sustainable fish farming caused by cormorants and otters. Innovation is necessary for the sub-sector to maintain its economic viability and to attract youth to a career in aquaculture.
Fish are a unique group which harbour some 30,000 species of helminths that do not occur in other vertebrates. This book deals specifically with parasitic worms of fish. It covers every aspect of their biology including identification, life-cycles, hostparasite relationships and ecology. It discusses approaches to studying parasitic worm infections, preference of species for particular host species, preference for dwelling in certain organs and tissues, biogeography, seasonality of infections and how parasites have evolved in parallel with their hosts. The book concludes with discussions of fish worms causing diseases in nature and in fish-farms.
Interest in the biology of African 'wetlands' was initiated in the last century with the hypothesis that Lake Tanganyika was once part of a Jurassic sea, and was furthered by Cunnington's expedition at the beginning of this century which proved that it was not. In the late 1920's, ecological studies, encouraged by the growing importance of inland fisheries, were started hy British, French and Belgian biologists. Some twenty years later several government limnological research centres and fishery departments were established in tropical Africa, and scientific progress was accelerated. Scientific collaboration between the regions south of the Sahara was started formally in 1951 by the Scientific Council for Africa and stimulated by the International Biological Programme (1964-74) with its emphasis on biological productivity. Some of its interests were takcn on by SCOPE which recently selected continental wetlands as a Special Project; hence this book. The five authors, with-Patrick Denny as editor, have made a very valuable contribution both to science and to thc management of Africa's natural rcsourccs: thcy have filled a gap in the synthesis of knowledge about Africa's environments which is long overdue. The term 'wetland' is used today in several different contexts. For this purpose, it excludes the seas and large open inland waters. which are too deep for rooted plants, but includes the huge areas of floodplains and dambos which may change seasonally from standing water to very dry lands.
