This is an open access book.Energy storage systems are the key to the successful energy transition to full renewable energy supply and are more relevant today than ever before. They address numerous challenges of the energy transition at once: stabilise the electricity grids, support the shutdown of power plants, make regionally generated electricity available locally and compensate for fluctuations in renewable energy generation. For more than 15 years now, EUROSOLAR has dedicated the annual International Conference on Renewable Energy Storage (IRES) to this important topic. The conference, which has been organised in partnership with Messe Düsseldorf since 2015, addressed the current state of research and the social, political and legal framework conditions of energy storage technologies from 20 to 22 September 2022, as part of its exhibitions on decarbonised industries. In up to three parallel series of lectures, experts from science, practice, politics and society focused on the current state of knowledge about energy storage. In recent years, more than 4000 visitors attended Energy Storage Europe, the predecessor of Messe Düsseldorf’s decarbXpo and IRES, each year. In plenary sessions, topic-specific lecture series and discussion rounds, around 150 lectures were presented including a large poster exhibition. We look forward to welcoming you to the 17th IRES in 2023.

The International Conference on ICT for Digital, Smart, and Sustainable Development provides an annual platform for researchers, academicians, and professionals from across the world. ICIDSSD 22, held at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, India, is the second international conference of this series of conferences to be held annually. The conference majorly focuses on the recent developments in the areas relating to Information and Communication Technologies and contributing to Sustainable Development. ICIDSSD ’22 has attracted research papers pertaining to an array of exciting research areas. The selected papers cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to Sustainable Development, Green Computing, Smart City, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing LT, ANN, Security, and Data Science. Papers have primarily been judged on originality, presentation, relevance, and quality of work. Papers that clearly demonstrate results have been preferred. After the formal process of peer review, the editorial board has finally selected the most relevant papers to be included in this volume. We are sure that these research works will enrich our knowledge and motivate us towards exploring the latest avenues in research. We would like to thank our Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr) M.Afshar Alarn, for his constant and commendable support extended to us toward the path of excellence. Alongside him, we would like to thank the Registrar, Mr. Syed Saud Akhtar, and other officials of the University for supporting this conference. We thank our esteemed authors for having shown confidence in us and entrusting us with the publication of their research papers. The success of the conference would not have been possible without the submission of their quality research works. We thank the members of the International Scientific Advisory Committee, Technical Program Committee and members of all the other committees for their advice, guidance, and efforts. Also, we are grateful to our technical partners and sponsors, viz. HNF, EAI, ISTE, AICTE, TIC, CSI, JETE, and DST for sponsorship and assistance. We also thank the Department of Higher Education, MHRD for the timely issuance of ISBN for the proceedings of the conference. Finally, we are thankful to all who have contributed to the success of this conference.
The secure storage of energy and carbon dioxide in subsurface geological formations plays a crucial role in transitioning to a low-carbon energy system. The suitability and security of subsurface storage sites rely on the geological and hydraulic properties of the reservoir and confining units. Additionally, their ability to withstand varying thermal, mechanical, hydraulic, biological and chemical conditions during storage operations is essential. Each subsurface storage technology has distinct geological requirements and faces specific economic, logistical, public and scientific challenges. As a result, certain sites can be better suited than others for specific low-carbon energy applications. This Special Publication provides a summary of the state of the art in subsurface energy and carbon dioxide storage. It includes 20 case studies that offer insights into site selection, characterization of reservoir processes, the role of caprocks and fault seals, as well as monitoring and risk assessment needs for subsurface storage operations.
Energy markets are already undergoing considerable transitions to accommodate new (renewable) energy forms, new (decentral) energy players, and new system requirements, e.g. flexibility and resilience. Traditional energy markets for fossil fuels are therefore under pressure, while not-yet-mature (renewable) energy markets are emerging. As a consequence, investments in large-scale and capital intensive (traditional) energy production projects are surrounded by high uncertainty, and are difficult to hedge by private entities. Traditional energy production companies are transforming into energy service suppliers and companies aggregating numerous potential market players are emerging, while regulation and system management are playing an increasing role. To address these increasing uncertainties and complexities, economic analysis, forecasting, modeling and investment assessment require fresh approaches and views. Novel research is thus required to simulate multiple actor interplays and idiosyncratic behavior. The required approaches cannot deal only with energy supply, but need to include active demand and cover systemic aspects. Energy market transitions challenge policy-making. Market coordination failure, the removal of barriers hindering restructuring and the combination of market signals with command-and-control policy measures are some of the new aims of policies. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect research papers that address the above issues using novel methods from any adequate perspective, including economic analysis, modeling of systems, behavioral forecasting, and policy assessment. The issue will include, but is not be limited to: Local control schemes and algorithms for distributed generation systems; Centralized and decentralized sustainable energy management strategies; Communication architectures, protocols and properties of practical applications; Topologies of distributed generation systems improving flexibility, efficiency and power quality; Practical issues in the control design and implementation of distributed generation systems; Energy transition studies for optimized pathway options aiming for high levels of sustainability.
