This is a two-week summer school attended by an international group of about seventy students at the PhD level. The self-contained and thorough lectures cover the underlying principles of modern detectors and applications in a variety of areas. This didactic introduction of Modern Concepts in Particle Detection provides an excellent opportunity for established researchers in particle physics to refresh their knowledge, or for students to become acquainted with current techniques. There are no equivalent text books existing.
The proceedings is mainly devoted to experimental high energy physics which comprise (i) review articles on experimental techniques for the detection of particles and radiation; (ii) articles on experimental and theoretical challenges for particle physics in the nineties; (iii) description and laboratory guide to small table top experiments that were performed during the school and which can be reproduced easily for teaching purposes.

The aim of the proceedings is to give, in a comprehensive way, an introduction to the main topics in Elementary Particle Physics as well as to present current research activities on both theoretical and experimental subjects. It can be considered as a complementary volume to the proceedings of the first and second Hellenic Schools.
This book is principally concerned with the relatively complex small molecules produced by plants, which are important as drugs, fine chemicals, fragrances, flavours and biologically-active dietary constituents. In a wide-ranging series of thematic essays, it covers key aspects of their role in plant ecology, their metabolism in the plant, their discovery, characterisation and use and their significance in the diet. Biotechnology, including prospects for the genetic engineering of metabolic pathways, for biotransformations and also for the production of biologically-active proteins, is the focus of the final section of the book. The overall aim of the volume is to provide, in each of the selected subject areas, a personal critique which is readily accessible to the advanced undergraduate student and to the non-specialist research worker alike.
This book is intended for amateurs, students and teachers. The author presents partial results which could be obtained with exclusively elementary methods. The proofs are given in detail, with minimal prerequisites. An original feature are the ten interludes, devoted to important topics of elementary number theory, thus making the reading of this book self-contained. Their interest goes beyond Fermat's theorem. The Epilogue is a serious attempt to render accessible the strategy of the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem, a great mathematical feat.
ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES Meeting the need for a coherently written and comprehensive compendium combining field theory and particle physics for advanced students and researchers, this volume directly links the theory to the experiments. It is clearly divided into two sections covering approaches to field theory and the Standard Model, and rounded off with numerous useful appendices. A timely work for high energy and theoretical physicists, as well as astronomers, graduate students and lecturers in physics. From the contents: Particles and Fields Lorentz Invariance Dirac Equation Field Quantization Scattering Matrix QED: Quantum Electrodynamics Radiative Corrections and Tests of Qed Symmetries Path Integral : Basics Path Integral Approach to Field Theory Accelerator and Detector Technology Spectroscopy The Quark Model Weak Interaction Neutral Kaons and CP Violation Hadron Structure Gauge Theories Appendices Volume 2 (2013, ISBN 3-527-40966-1) will concentrate on the main aspects of the Standard Model by addressing its recent developments and future prospects. Furthermore, it will give some thought to intriguing ideas beyond the Standard Model, including the Higgs boson, the neutrino, the concepts of the Grand Unified Theory and supersymmetry, axions, and cosmological developments.
This volume is an almost exhaustive review of what physicists are doing (and intend to do for the future hadron colliders LHC and SSC) in the field of calorimetry in high energy physics. It is divided into two parts. The first comprises a series of invited papers which illustrate the state of the art in the field. The second is made up of contributed papers on calorimetry for LHC and SSC.
