The genus Cordyceps and allied species, such as entomopathogenic fungi, mainly parasitize insects and other arthropods and have been known since ancient times. They are a source of hundreds of metabolites of medicinal significance used in drug discovery and drug development. The book reviews the developments in cordyceps research and its applications. It covers areas such as diversity, distribution, taxonomy, phylogeny, genetics, bioactive potential, nutraceutical values, biotechnological prospects, plant protection, safety concerns, and marketed products. Further, the impact of human interference as well as climate change on the habitats of Cordyceps has been discussed. The book is meant for readers with an interest in mycology and allied areas. It is also invaluable to personnel carrying out research in disciplines like applied biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, ecology, entomology, environmental biology, field biology, forestry, and zoology.
This book gathers papers presented at the 2019 Movement, Health & Exercise (MoHE) Conference and International Sports Science Conference (ISSC). The theme of this year’s conference was "Enhancing Health and Sports Performance by Design". The content covers (but is not limited to) the following topics: exercise science; human performance; physical activity & health; sports medicine; sports nutrition; management & sports studies; and sports engineering & technology.
Toward Active Living is the first book to bridge the gap between high-level research in the physical activity sciences and its application to programs and practice. The book combines the perspectives of expert scientists, educators, practitioners, and policy makers into one of the most extensive and thorough references available for the promotion of physical activity, fitness, and health. Written in nontechnical language, Toward Active Living includes 41 of the papers presented during the Active Living portion of the 1992 International Conference on Physical Activity, Fitness, and Health held in Toronto. The book enables practitioners to apply research-based knowledge in the physical activity sciences in their day-to-day work. Toward Active Living is an essential reference that fitness instructors, health/fitness administrators, physical educators, students, and policy makers will turn to again and again.
Intelligent environments (IE) play an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives, including education, healthcare and the domestic environment. The term refers to physical spaces incorporating pervasive computing technology used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment or both. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops of the 8th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE ‘12), held in Guanajuato, Mexico, in June 2012. The workshops which make up the conference range from regular lectures to practical sessions. They provide a forum for scientists, researchers and engineers from both industry and academia to engage in discussions on newly emerging or rapidly evolving topics in the field. Topics covered in the workshops include intelligent environments supporting healthcare and well-being; artificial intelligence techniques for ambient intelligence; large-scale intelligent environments; intelligent domestic robots; intelligent environment technology in education; multimodal interfaces applied in skills transfer, healthcare and rehabilitation; the reliability of intelligent environments and improving industrial automation using intelligent environments. IE can enrich user experience, better manage the environment's resources, and increase user awareness of that environment. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the application of intelligent environments.
In the last decade, we have witnessed the rapid development of electronic technologies that are transforming our daily lives. Such technologies are often integrated with various sensors that facilitate the collection of human motion and physiological data and are equipped with wireless communication modules such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification, and near-field communication. In smart healthcare applications, designing ergonomic and intuitive human–computer interfaces is crucial because a system that is not easy to use will create a huge obstacle to adoption and may significantly reduce the efficacy of the solution. Signal and data processing is another important consideration in smart healthcare applications because it must ensure high accuracy with a high level of confidence in order for the applications to be useful for clinicians in making diagnosis and treatment decisions. This Special Issue is a collection of 10 articles selected from a total of 26 contributions. These contributions span the areas of signal processing and smart healthcare systems mostly contributed by authors from Europe, including Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, and Netherlands. Authors from China, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Ecuador are also included.
