The bestselling book that has helped millions of readers solve any problem A must-have guide by eminent mathematician G. Polya, How to Solve It shows anyone in any field how to think straight. In lucid and appealing prose, Polya reveals how the mathematical method of demonstrating a proof or finding an unknown can help you attack any problem that can be reasoned out—from building a bridge to winning a game of anagrams. How to Solve It includes a heuristic dictionary with dozens of entries on how to make problems more manageable—from analogy and induction to the heuristic method of starting with a goal and working backward to something you already know. This disarmingly elementary book explains how to harness curiosity in the classroom, bring the inventive faculties of students into play, and experience the triumph of discovery. But it’s not just for the classroom. Generations of readers from all walks of life have relished Polya’s brilliantly deft instructions on stripping away irrelevancies and going straight to the heart of a problem.
Are you struggling with intrusive thoughts that seem to control your life? Are you finding it difficult to manage overwhelming doubts, anxiety, and depression? If so, you are not alone. These emotions are difficult to manage because they are designed to protect us from harm. However, sometimes trauma can interfere with our ability to regulate our emotions, amplifying them and generating devastating effects for ourselves and others. In this book, you will learn how to face your inner demons head-on and achieve inner peace through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT is a highly effective method promoted by psychologists and therapists around the world. By rewiring your subconscious mind, you can drive away intrusive thoughts and anxieties of all kinds forever. Here's a taste of what you'll find inside: • Understanding and Changing Beliefs and Mental Models • Managing Automatic and Intrusive Thoughts • Regulating Emotional Responses • Setting and Achieving Goals in Your Life • Confronting and Overcoming Fears • Tools for Tracking Progress Toward Goals • Basic and Advanced CBT Techniques • Techniques for Dealing with Anxiety, Anger, Depression, OCD, and Insomnia • Daily CBT Techniques for Maintaining Progress • Preventing Relapses and Exploring Other Types of CBT Experience a journey to liberation, a euphoric sense of elation, and a fortified sense of self-worth as you unlock what has been destined for you. Issues on Global Governance contains the Expert Papers of the Commission on Global Governance. The Commission is concerned primarily with furthering global cooperation (i.e. coordinated multilateral action) to `meet the challenge of securing peace, achieving sustainable development and universalizing democracy'. The Expert Papers have been written especially for the Commission's Working Groups (One: Global Values; Two: Security; Three: Development; Four: Governance) by authorities in the field (viz. Abi-Saab, Galtung, Haas).
This volume is an important contribution to our understanding of culture and alcohol in the United States. Its appearance is also a milestone in the history of alcohol studies in American anthropology. Over the last six years, the volume's editors, initially along with Miriam Rodin, have served as the coorganizers of the Alcohol and Drug Study Group of the American Anthropological Association (AAA). In this capacity, they have organized sessions at the AAA and other meetings, greatly strengthened the research network with a regular and informative newsletter, and painstakingly promoted the publication of anthropological work on al cohol and drugs. Appearing just as the responsibility for the Study Group is passed on to others, this book is a fitting emblem of the care and energy with which its editors have built an institutional nexus for alcohol and drug anthropology in North America. The contents of this volume offer a uniquely wide sampling of the diversity of cultural patterns that make up the American experience with alcohol. The collective portrait the editors have assembled extends in several dimensions: through time and history, across such social differ entiations as gender, age-grade, and social class, and through such major social institutions as the church and the family. Clearly the dominant dimension of variation in the material that follows, however, is ethnicity. The book offers us a sampler of unprecedented richness of the different experiences with alcohol of American ethnoreligious groups.
This volume is an excellent guide for anyone interested in variational analysis, optimization, and PDEs. It offers a detailed presentation of the most important tools in variational analysis as well as applications to problems in geometry, mechanics, elasticity, and computer vision. This second edition covers several new topics: new section on capacity theory and elements of potential theory now includes the concepts of quasi-open sets and quasi-continuity; increased number of examples in the areas of linearized elasticity system, obstacles problems, convection-diffusion, and semilinear equations; new section on mass transportation problems and the Kantorovich relaxed formulation of the Monge problem; new subsection on stochastic homogenization establishes the mathematical tools coming from ergodic theory; and an entirely new and comprehensive chapter (17) devoted to gradient flows and the dynamical approach to equilibria. The book is intended for Ph.D. students, researchers, and practitioners who want to approach the field of variational analysis in a systematic way.
This text provides the theory and practice for conducting pharmaceutical policy research. It covers all aspects of scientific research from conceptualising to statistical analysis. It also provides scientific basis and a good understanding of the principles and practice of conducting pharmaceutical policy research.
Finite model theory,as understoodhere, is an areaof mathematicallogic that has developed in close connection with applications to computer science, in particular the theory of computational complexity and database theory. One of the fundamental insights of mathematical logic is that our understanding of mathematical phenomena is enriched by elevating the languages we use to describe mathematical structures to objects of explicit study. If mathematics is the science of patterns, then the media through which we discern patterns, as well as the structures in which we discern them, command our attention. It isthis aspect oflogicwhichis mostprominentin model theory,“thebranchof mathematical logic which deals with the relation between a formal language and its interpretations”. No wonder, then, that mathematical logic, and ?nite model theory in particular, should ?nd manifold applications in computer science: from specifying programs to querying databases, computer science is rife with phenomena whose understanding requires close attention to the interaction between language and structure. This volume gives a broadoverviewof some central themes of ?nite model theory: expressive power, descriptive complexity, and zero–one laws, together with selected applications to database theory and arti?cial intelligence, es- cially constraint databases and constraint satisfaction problems. The ?nal chapter provides a concise modern introduction to modal logic, which emp- sizes the continuity in spirit and technique with ?nite model theory.
