Ying-Kit Choi details the guidelines, principles, and philosophy needed to produce design documents for heavy civil engineering projects.
Good design is the key to the manufacture of successful commercial products. It encompasses creativity, technical ability, communication at all levels, good management and the abiltity to mould these attributes together. There are no single answers to producing a well designed product. There are however tried and tested principles which, if followed, increase the likely success of any final product. Engineering Design Principles introduces these principles to engineering students and professional engineers. Drawing on historical and familiar examples from the present, the book provides a stimulating guide to the principles of good engineering design. The comprehensive coverage of this text makes it invaluable to all undergraduates requiring a firm foundation in the subject. - Introduction to principles of good engineering design like: problem identification, creativity, concept selection, modelling, design management and information gathering - Rich selection of historical and familiar present examples
Engineering for Sustainable Communities: Principles and Practices defines and outlines sustainable engineering methods for real-world engineering projects.
Learn the principles and practices of ethics as applied to civil and structural engineering This comprehensive textbook covers engineering ethics specifically through the lens of civil and structural engineering. Ethics in Civil and Structural Engineering: Professional Responsibility & Standard of Care uses known standards of professional care, ethical codes of conduct, published court opinions, and case studies specifically from the civil and structural engineering disciplines to connect core concepts to real-world professional practices. The book draws on examples of structural design, engineering of land and infrastructure development, and surveying to highlight ethical lessons, define professional competence, illustrate the expected standard of care, and summarize the future of best practices. Readers will get strategies that they can use to construct a morally based professional foundation and take an ethical approach to issues such as environmental sustainability, resilient design and construction, professional responsibility, design and decision justification, business and interpersonal relationships, and dispute resolution. Covers numerous ethical codes of conduct published in the United States and internationally Features court-based opinions and case studies that illustrate key concepts Includes review and discussion questions suitable for self-study or a college-level course Written by a practicing engineer and experienced author
Unique in perspective, approach, and coverage, this book is written specifically to introduce architectural, construction and civil engineering technicians to elementary engineering concepts, design principles, and practices. Using a practical, non-classical, non-calculus approach, it combines -- in one volume -- full coverage of the statics, strengths of materials, and building structure analysis/design concepts that technicians must master for the demands of today's changing workplace. Provides nearly 180 examples and over 200 supporting illustrations and photographs, including photos of buildings under construction and in sequence. Contains a very comprehensive set of tables of structural products and their properties. For anyone studying or interested in architectural technology, architectural engineering technology, structural technology, structural engineering technology, civil engineering technology, construction engineering technology, or construction management.
For B.E./B.Tech. & M.E/ M.Tech. Students of Civil Engineering. Also for Practising Engineering and Designers
The Definitive Reference for Designers and Design StudentsA solid grasp of the fundamentals of materials, along with a thorough understanding of load and design techniques, provides the components needed to complete a marine platform design. Design Principles of Ships and Marine Structures details every facet of ship design and design integr
“Engineers are titans of real-world problem-solving. . . . In this riveting study of how they think, [Guru Madhavan] puts behind-the-scenes geniuses . . . center stage.”—Nature In this engaging account of innovative triumphs, Guru Madhavan examines the ways in which engineers throughout history created world-changing tools, from ATMs and ZIP codes to the digital camera and the disposable diaper. Equal parts personal, practical, and profound, Applied Minds charts a path to a future where we borrow strategies from engineering to find inspired solutions to our most pressing challenges.
Prepared by the Task Committee on Structural Design for Physical Security of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report provides guidance to structural engineers in the design of civil structures to resist the effects of terrorist bombings. As dramatized by the bombings of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, civil engineers today need guidance on designing structures to resist hostile acts. The U.S. military services and foreign embassy facilities developed requirements for their unique needs, but these the documents are restricted. Thus, no widely available document exists to provide engineers with the technical data necessary to design civil structures for enhanced physical security. The unrestricted government information included in this report is assembled collectively for the first time and rephrased for application to civilian facilities. Topics include: determination of the threat, methods by which structural loadings are derived for the determined threat, the behavior and selection of structural systems, the design of structural components, the design of security doors, the design of utility openings, and the retrofitting of existing structures. This report transfers this technology to the civil sector and provides complete methods, guidance, and references for structural engineers challenged with a physical security problem.
