Most discussions on negotiation use an exclusively at-the-table perspective, focused on tactics, persuasion, psychology and other 1-D elements of the negotiation process. Articulating a 3-D perspective, this book presents a practical approach by focusing on the surface process and also on the value to be unlocked with skillful deal-design.
In 2011 more than 60 of the world's leading negotiation scholars gathered in Beijing for the Rethinking Negotiation Teaching project's third and final international conference. The event, like the preceding conferences in Rome and Istanbul, was designed to inspire a diverse and energetic group of scholars to push forward their thinking on what is taught and how it is taught in contemporary negotiation courses. The resulting productivity required two volumes. This one wraps up the project as a whole. Multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams address the challenges of teaching negotiation in the face of profound cultural difference; move forward a project special focus on "wicked problems" (those ill-defined, ambiguous challenges for which even defining "the problem" is elusive, let alone attaining a "solution"); design innovative and concrete teaching tools for use both in and outside of the classroom; and introduce an array of new topics for the field, ranging from the possibilities of "informal" education to the role of physical movement in negotiation instruction.

Your ability to negotiate might even be the most important factor in your career advancement. Negotiation is also the key to business success. No organization can survive without contracts that produce profits. At a strategic level, businesses are concerned with value creation and achieving competitive advantage. But the success of high-level business strategies depends on contracts made with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. Contracting capability—the ability to negotiate and perform successful contracts—is the most important function in any organization. Similarly, the books on contract law tend to focus on the legal requirements for a contract to be valid, thus giving short shrift to the negotiation process that precedes the contract and to the performance that follows. Organisations are involved in various types of negotiation. As digitalisation advances, such business negotiations are to a large extent electronic negotiations. Consequently, dedicated training for such electronic negotiations is important for mastering negotiation skills. The present book develops a new approach for a motivating and improved e-negotiation training by applying gamification, i.e. using game design elements in a non-game context, in order to improve participants' motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. A negotiation support system used within an e-negotiation training is enhanced with game design elements. The book describes the design process, its theoretical foundations, and the evaluation of the gamified negotiation support system. The final quantitative evaluation shows higher motivation, engagement and better learning outcomes for participants in the gamified training compared to a conventional training. Organisations can employ the designed artefact for fundamental and effective e-negotiation training. Additionally, the book provides insights in how to design a gamified system for a particular application context.
This book examines the types of problems and constraints faced by specialists in the areas of security, medicine, mental health, aviation and engineering. Every day we rely on highly trained specialists to solve complex problems in high-stakes environments, that is, environments involving direct threats to the preservation of human life. While previous work has tended to focus on problem solving in a single domain, this book covers multiple, related domains. In May 2010, more than 50 of the world's leading negotiation scholars gathered in Beijing, China for the Rethinking Negotiation Teaching project's third international conference designed to critically examine what is taught in contemporary negotiation courses and how we teach them, with special emphasis on how best to "translate" teaching methodology to succeed with diverse, global audiences. We chose China is the ideal venue to conclude our project's inquiry, not only because of its own long history with negotiation, internal and external to the country, but because it is a nation with which, tensions or no tensions, every other nation must negotiate in the future. Yet, China has been almost unrepresented in the modern literature - at least, in the literature that is expressly about "negotiation." Chinese scholars and practitioners also have yet to assert much influence in the global negotiation training market. Our hope was that the conference would serve as a springboard for the entry into this field, at a sophisticated level, of Chinese and other Asian scholars whose deep experience in many related subjects has yet to be fully felt in their implications for the field of negotiation. The contents of this volume, as well as the fourth and final volume in this teaching series - Educating Negotiators for a Connected World (Honeyman, Coben, and Lee 2012), suggest we may have succeeded in that particular goal.
