The study is based on a combination of previous research and historical initiatives taken by authorities in the respective Nordic countries to promote safety in fisheries. So far there has been limited knowledge about what has worked and has positively influenced the rate and severity of occupational accidents, and fishermen's own experiences with prevention has not been studied. Therefore, the project has been supplemented with a joint Nordic investigation of fishermen, focusing on the accumulation of the fishermen’s experience regarding actions that have played a preventive role in terms of occupational accidents in fisheries. On this basis, the results of the study have been summarised. Possible explanations for the significant reduction in the work accidents highlighted by the report, and recommendations for dissemination of the results of the project have been outlined.
Prevention of Accidents at Work collects papers presented at the 9th International Conference on the Prevention of Accidents at Work (WOS 2017) held in Prague, Czech Republic, on October 3-6, 2017, organized by the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. The conference on current issues within occupational safety is organized under the umbrella of Workingonsafety.net (WOS.net). WOS.net is an international network of decision-makers, researchers and professionals responsible for the prevention of accidents and trauma at work. The network aims to bring accident prevention experts together in order to facilitate the exchange of experience, new findings and best practices between different countries and sectors. WOS.net is supported by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). The overall theme is safety management complexity in a changing society, with the motto: Do we need a holistic approach? Underlying topics include: Foundations of safety science: theories, principles, methods and tools; Research to practice: achievements, lessons learned and challenges; Risk management and safety culture: case studies, best practices and further needs; Safety regulation: reasonable practicable approach; Education and training: prerequisite for safety; Complexity and safety: multidisciplinarity and inter-stakeholder views. This report provides results of a Nordic seminar held in October 2003 regarding contemporary occupational safety research in the Nordic building and construction industries. The report provides conclusions of roundtable discussions from four plenary sessions regarding accident investigation and prevention, the meaning and significance of safety culture and safety climate, the influence of firm size on occupational safety, and good practices for safety management. In addition, the report contains abstracts of over 75 ongoing or recently completed safety research projects in the Nordic building and construction industries, as well as injury and employment statistics for the period 1992 through 2001.

A sustainable working life that prevents work-related health problems and facilitate inclusion of young workers is vital to ensure the health, safety and work participation among young workers in the Nordic countries. This report provides Nordic statistics, scientific knowledge and discussions on how to achieve a sustainable work life for young workers in the Nordic countries. Under the Swedish presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2013, the focus was on youth and young workers' working conditions. As part of this focus, the Nordic Council of Ministers commissioned this report. The report shows that an inter-disciplinary and comprehensive approach is essential to ensure a sustainable work life among young workers. Six characteristics are emphasized as important: the characteristics of the worker, the workplace, the work task, the employment, the education and the youth.
