This book provides essential information for using quantitative Doppler echocardiography in routine clinical cardiological practice. It translates complex concepts and formulations into practical, easily understood evaluations that will allow any properly equipped echocardiographic laboratory to enjoy the rewards of "quantitative" cardiac Doppler. The book is organized so that physical-physiological mechanisms and methods are presented first and then their practical applications are emphasized for various anatomical sites in the cardiovascular system. Chapter summaries are provided to allow readers to rapidly review the most pertinent information contained within each chapterr. The book's first four chapters deal basically with the fundamental mechanisms that affect clinical evaluations, such as basic formulations, pressure gradients, pressure half-times, and time velocity integrals. Remaining chapters discuss the anatomical areas of the heart and great vessels. Appendix A presents "technical tips" relative to the performance of the Doppler examination. Appendix B provides helpful blank "worksheets" and valvular and hemodynamic abnormalities. Appendix C presents an easy reference to normal and abnormal echo-Doppler values. Both cardiology students and practicing professionals will find this book indispensable for help with upgrading the level of noninvasive diagnostic capabilities in their Doppler echocardiographic labs.
Since the introduction of ultrasound in cardiology in the mid fifties, echocar diography has continued to grow and has finally become, in particular after the introduction of Doppler modalities, the working horse of the cardiologist. Although many books have been written on this subject Dr. Hamer's book is a very valuable contribution, as it provides, in particular information for practicing clinicians and technicians. Clearly written and nicely illustrated, this book is a must for those interested in this field. C.A. Visser Professor of Echocardiology Preface Trans-thoracic echocardiography is a patient friendly technique without pain or discomfort. It is harmless and the patient can relax during the examination. With these advantages in mind there is hardly any technique in cardiology that can provide so much valuable information about the function of the heart. If Doppler and color Doppler, also painless techniques, are added to echo cardiography additional information about blood flow velocities, insufficiency and stenosis of valves, detection of shunts etc. is obtainable. Less patient friendly but - if selectively used - very informative, is trans esophageal (color Doppler) echocardiography.
The introduction of quantitative Doppler echocardiography gave rise to explo sive interest in the application of this method in clinical cardiology. However, before cardiologists could fully validate its clinical utility, they were confronted with a further development, namely color-coded Doppler flow imaging. This new technique allows a comprehensive study of the direction, velocity, uniformity and timing of intracardiac blood flow, while simultaneously revealing cardiac struc tures and their movement. 'Color Doppler' facilitates the diagnosis of a variety of cardiac conditions, and an overwhelming amount of information is available at any instant. Interpretation of these fascinating images requires a substantial experience and theoretical background. This monograph updates the application of color Doppler to both congenital and acquired heart disease. The work comprises 15 chapters written by authorities in the field, each of whom presents his most recent experience in the field. In addition, further advantages in the clinical use of pulsed and continuous wave Doppler in pediatric and adult cardiol ogy are presented. This book contains, of course, many color plates. 1. An echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than a plain x-ray image and involves no radiation exposure (MedlinePlus). This book is a practical guide to the latest advances and techniques in echocardiography. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamentals of the procedure, the following sections discuss both basic and advanced techniques for different cardiac conditions. Highly illustrated with echo images and diagrams of heart structures, this invaluable reference helps trainees recognise and interpret echocardiographic images and Doppler flow data to make an accurate clinical diagnosis. Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. Second edition of a clinical reference for cardiovascular technologists and cardiology residents. Previous edition 1990. Halftone illustrations and plates. DNLM: Echocardiography, Doppler.
Now in its Second Edition, with full-color illustrations throughout, this practical manual provides a basic introduction to the "how-to's" of diagnostic and intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography. It covers all types of heart surgery in which TEE is used and addresses clinical challenges in specific settings such as the ICU and anatomic regions such as the thoracic aorta. Each chapter includes multiple-choice questions for exam preparation. The book is portable and easy to use in the operating room. This edition includes full-color echocardiograms in all chapters and colorized and revamped drawings. A new chapter covers cardiac masses and embolic sources.
