This volume brings together the dynamic discussions and lively debate of intercultural and multicultural education taking place across the world. Contributors take readers to the countries, schools, and nongovernmental agencies where intercultural education and multicultural education, either collectively or singularly, are active (often central) concepts or practices in the daily educational undertaking and discourse of society.
This is the third book in the Pestalozzi series. The first, Teacher education for change, dealt with the underlying philosophy of the Pestalozzi Programme and its approach to education in general and teacher education in particular. The second Intercultural competence for all, looked at the various implications of promoting the development of intercultural competence as a main concern of mainstream education. This work takes a step further towards the full integration of intercultural competences as a key element within the education system. It aims at offering an educational rationale and conceptual framework for the development of intercultural competence, as well as a clear description of its constitutive elements to be developed in and through education.
In many ways, education mirrors society by reflecting changing and emergent goals and values as well as by contributing to both the reproduction and production of particular life forms. In the context of the formative project «Europe, » education is called upon to play an increasingly central role, one that is responsive to particular images of the European Union and to its aspirations and goals. The widespread conviction is that education and training will re-invigorate ailing economies, and that, in the context of globalization, national and regional competitiveness will only prevail if there is a qualitative continued improvement in human capital. This volume critically examines such claims, considering the ways in which learning is being constructed across Europe and the implications this has for notions of democratic citizenship and education.
La question de l'identité européenne a souvent été soulevée par les historiens sous l'angle de la civilisation et de l'héritage historique et culturel commun. Mais l'identité européenne n'a que rarement été abordée à travers une grille de lecture liée à l'émergence d'un espace public européen et d'une expérience de vivre ensemble. Cet ouvrage se propose donc de croiser les compétences multiples de jeunes chercheurs européens, afin d'identifier les vecteurs porteurs d'une identité européenne et de mesurer leur réalité ou leurs insuffisances. Ce faisant, il propose des pistes de développement pour cette identité européenne encore en gestation, afin d'en déterminer les enjeux pour l'Europe. Il se fonde sur la Convention du Conseil de l’Europe sur la prévention et la lutte contre la violence à l’égard des femmes et la violence domestique (également connue sous le nom de Convention d’Istanbul), qui est entrée en vigueur en août 2014. La Convention d’Istanbul est le premier traité à reconnaître l’existence des mutilations génitales féminines en Europe et la nécessité d’une réponse systématique en la matière (article 38 de la convention). Elle exige des États parties qu’ils renforcent les mesures de prévention en s’adressant aux communautés affectées, tout comme au grand public et aux professionnels concernés. Elle génère l’obligation d’offrir protection et soutien aux femmes et aux filles en danger lorsqu’elles en ont le plus besoin. Elle place également au premier plan leurs besoins et leur sécurité.
