Excerpt from Popular Lectures on the Steam Engine, in Which Its Construction and Operation Are Familiarly Explained: With an Historical Sketch of Its Invention and Progressive Improvement In preparing an edition of the Rev. Dr. Lardner's Popular Lectures on the Steam-Engine for publication, a few additions have been considered necessary. These consist principally in descriptions of such improvements in the Steam-Engine as have been made in this country, or such notices as may render the work more useful to the American reader. They are embodied in the work in such places as appear fitted to receive them. They may be distinguished from the original paragraphs of the text from their being marked by letters instead of numbers, and their having the initials A. E. subscribed to each of them. Among these additions will be found a more full explanation of the application of the Steam-Engine to railways than is contained in the original; and an account (accompanied by a plate) of the very simple form of the high-pressure engine as it is now constructed in this City. In How Invention Begins, Lienhard reconciles the ends of invention with the individual leaps upon which they are built, illuminating the vast web of individual inspirations that lie behind whole technologies. He traces, for instance, the way in which thousands of people applied their combined genius to airplanes, trains, and automobiles, revealing how a collective desire, an upwelling of fascination, a spirit of the times--a Zeitgeist--laid its hold upon inventors. The thing they all sought to create was speed itself. Can we speak of speed as an invention? To do so, he concludes, is certainly no greater a stretch than to call the car an "invention."
Contemporary disaster investigation reports into the Shuttle, Three Mile Island, or the World Trade Centre did not happen by chance, but were the result of an evolution of the discourse communities involved with investigating technological accidents. The relationships of private companies, coroners, outside experts, and government investigators all had to be developed and experimented with before a genre of investigation reports could exist. This book is the story of the evolution of these investigation discourse communities in published reports written between 1833 and 1879.
