Life and nature often create compositions in a minor key. Upheavals and traumatic events offer dissonance, which eventually resolve in some harmony. This collection reflects some of those minor chords and dissonance but is also threaded through with a slender strand of hope. Each event allows for resolution to more melodic notes. Even nature has a dying before resurrection and in the process can offer beauty and promise. The upheaval of lives in ?Executive Orders? leads eventually to the creation of some order, even in a repressive situation. Other poems mirror responses we have to negative situations, often moving through the varied stages of grief to arrive at some resolution. Nature moves through life stages ? birth, full bloom, aging and death only to be resurrected as the seasons roll around in harmony. This collection of poems attempts to express these journeys as well as movement towards harmony.
From acclaimed musician Alicia Keys comes a revealing songbook of collected poems and lyrics that document her growth as a person, a woman, and an artist. “All my life, I’ve written these words with no thought or intention of sharing them. Not even with my confidants. These are my most delicate thoughts. The ones that I wrote down just so I could understand what in the world these things I was thinking meant...” When she burst onto the music scene with her multi-million bestselling, Grammy® Award-winning first album, Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys became a superstar. Two decades later, her career has expanded into producing, acting, and passionate activism—winning her worldwide acclaim, numerous awards, and a spot on Time’s list of “The 100 Most Influential People.” Though Alicia has been very vocal through her career, there were always “delicate thoughts” that she never before imagined she’d share with anyone else—until now. In Tears for Water, Alicia Keys opens the journals and notebooks that she has kept throughout her life and reveals her heart to her fans in return for all the love they have shown to her and her music. Hello morning now I see you cause I am awake What was once so sweet and secure has turned out to be fake Girl, you can’t be scared gotta stand up tall and let ’em see what shines in you Push aside the part lying in your heart like the ocean is deep, dark and blue —from Golden Child
Focusing on the music of the great song composers--Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, and Strauss--Poetry Into Song offers a systematic introduction to the performance and analysis of Lieder . Part I, "The Language of Poetry," provides chapters on the themes and imagery of German Romanticism and the methods of analysis for German Romantic poetry. Part II, "The Language of the Performer," deals with issues of concern to performers: texture, temporality, articulation, and interpretation of notation and unusual rhythm accents and stresses. Part III provides clearly defined analytical procedures for each of four main chapters on harmony and tonality, melody and motive, rhythm and meter, and form. The concluding chapter compares different settings of the same text, and the volume ends with several appendices that offer text translations, over 40 pages of less accessible song scores, a glossary of technical terms, and a substantial bibliography. Directed toward students in both voice and theory, and toward all singers, the authors establish a framework for the analysis of song based on a process of performing, listening, and analyzing, designed to give the reader a new understanding of the reciprocal interaction between performance and analysis. Emphasizing the masterworks, the book features numerous poetic texts, as well as a core repertory of songs. Examples throughout the text demonstrate points, while end of chapter questions reinforce concepts and provide opportunities for directed analysis. While there are a variety of books on Lieder and on German Romantic poetry, none combines performance, musical analysis, textual analysis, and the interrelation between poetry and music in the systematic, thorough way of Poetry Into Song.
Jane Algozzini's poetry has won awards in the United States and has been printed internationally. The poems in this book were selected from a collection which was written over a 20 year span and includes the different formats she used as she developed and expanded her writing style. Much of her poetry expresses feelings that most people find easy to relate to even though they are expressed symbolically. The title of the book "Beneath the Snow" is also the name of the first poem in the book and expresses the way many of us put on a happy face for others while hiding the pain we feel inside. Her poetry has the ability to touch, not only the tender parts of out inner selves, but also the hope that drives us on and keeps us believing in a better future. I believe that this will be a book that you will keep and read many times over and you will find that the pages will wear out long before you tire of the content.
A collection of lyrical works written over the span of 25 plus years, "A Minor Poet In A Minor Key" is not only inspirational, but slightly autobiographical. While songwriting is often thought of as a process of pure intuition, it's very rarely the intuition is explained to the reader. Interpretations are left open and backgrounds are concealed. In "A Minor Poet In A Minor Key," the inspiration behind each lyrical work is presented. This unique approach allows the reader a chance to become close to the author through the stories that unfold from each piece.
This present offering is a selection of my verse written during the past twenty years. I have kept the rhyme and metre simple, on the whole, but have tried to add just enough variety to avoid monotony. Whether or not I have succeeded is for the reader to decide.
