Excerpt from Plants of Mississippi: A List of Flowering Plants and Ferns Mohr's Plant Life of Alabama has been used as a basis for this Bulletin. The arrangement Of Engler and Prantl, as adopted in that work has been closely followed here, and the nomenclature used by Mohr has been used in this list, except in a very few instances. No species has been included in the list unless it is found in our herbarium or is mentioned in the notes Of the writer or of Mr. T. L. Bailey, or is credited to the State by some reputable author. A few species have been included on the authority Of a partial list Of plants found with the Hilgard Manuscripts, and presumably made bv Dr. Hilgard, though no name was attached to the list. Excerpt from Flora of the Southern United States: Containing an Abridged Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida; Arranged According to the Natural System When the first edition of this work was issued, some portions of the country embraced within the limits assigned to it were imperfectly investigated or wholly unexplored. But the discoveries in Southern botany made during the last few years by Feay, Garber, Curtiss, and others, of tropical forms on the peninsula and keys of Florida, by Dr. Gattinger of Northern forms which extend into Tennessee and the mountains of North Carolina, and by correspondents from other States, have become so numerous that a new edition of the Southern Flora is required to embrace them. In this edition I have concluded to incorporate these additions in the form of a Supplement to the first edition, avoiding any material alterations in it. And now, since the different sections of all the States which are included in the limits embraced by this work have been pretty thoroughly explored, and future acquisitions will, probably, be comparatively few in number, the time seems to have arrived when the promise provisionally made in the Preface to the first edition may be at least partially fulfilled.
