This volume is a personal account of the Great Western Railway. The author spent most of his life on GWR territory: Newbury, Marlborough, Oxford, and Jersey. He describes privatized railways as they were, including GWR domestic airliners and diesel railcars. A wartime journey in an Italian cattle truck is an example of a not so obvious connection with the GWR. Included are poetic quotations by Sir John Betjeman and Thomas Hardy.
