For several years now the intense development in the field of microelectronics, the interest in coating materials, and activity in integrated optics have produced many advances in the field of thin solid filmg~ The research activity has become so intensive and so broad that it is necessary to divide the field into metallic and non metallic thin films. A summer school in the area of non metallic thin films appeared to be a very fruitful concept and, hence, in October, 1973, A.S.l.M.S. made a proposal to N.A.T.O to hold this second summer school in Corsica in September 1974. The basic idea behind this summer school was essentially to stress and synthesize physical properties and structure of non metallic thin films. The main reason for this was the feeling that many laboratories are very specialized and that few engage in both physical and structural analysis of these films. The program included a large section on' physical studies: electrical (transport, interface effects, switching), mechanical and optical. There was also a large section o~characterization, crystal structure, chemical composition (stoichiometry is always a difficult problem), bonding and electronic structure.
Based on lecture notes that have been used successfully by the authors for the past 10 years, with revisions made each year, this book is aimed at graduate students as well as professionals and researchers involved in thin film physics and technology. It is concise, comprehensive and well organized. The first part of the book introduces the concept, describes the various deposition procedures and illustrates PVD methods, evaporation and sputtering. The basic physical processes of film formation are then analyzed and formulated, including methods for monitoring and measuring film thickness. This book also shows how the subject matter connects with, relates and applies to other fields. In the second part of the book, 3 special topics — ferromagnetic films, diffusion in thin films and mechanical properties of thin films — are discussed.Given its wide scope, this book is relevant not just to those involved in materials science but also to engineers as well.

The Advanced Study Institute on Synthesis, Functional Properties and Applications of Nanostructures, held at the Knossos Royal Village, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, July 26, 2002 - August 4, 2002, successfully reviewed the state-of-the-art of nanostructures and nanotechnology. It was concluded that Nanotechnology is widely agreed to be the research focus that will lead to the next generation of breakthroughs in science and engineering. There are three cornerstones to the expectation that Nanotechnology will yield revolutionary advances in understanding and application: • Breakthroughs in properties that arise from materials fabricated from the nanoscale. • Synergistic behavior that arise from the combination of disparate types of materials (soft vs. hard, organic vs. inorganic, chemical vs. biological vs. solid state) at the nanoscale. • Exploitation of natural (e.g. chemical and biological) assembly mechanisms that can accomplish structural control at the nanoscale. It is expected that this will lead to paradigms for assembling bio-inspired functional systems that accomplish desirable properties that are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive using top-down approaches.
