The book, The Isoko Ethnic Nationality: In Time Perspective, is a concerted effort at interrogating the history and cultural practices of the mega Isoko clans with a concomitant foray into a concise discussion of the mini groups outside the main shores of Isoko. The approach of the author is novel and commendable. The author availed himself with existing literatures and interpreted same within the limit of new sources. The strong point of this work is the effort of the author in trying to weave the history of the Isoko people from the perspective of being one as epitomized by their intra-group relations. The view is that the Isoko were/are not a disparate ethnic nationality. The language of the author is acceptable and the font reader-friendly. The book is also illustrated with photographs. The book is recommended for scholars, administrators and all those truly committed to understanding who we are, where we are coming from, where we are, and what the future holds for us.
That Africa is at a crossroads in an increasingly globalised world is indisputable. Equally unassailable is the fact that the humanities, as a broad field of intellection, research and learning in Africa, appears to have been pigeonholed in debates of relevance in the development aspirations of many African nations. Historical experiences and contemporary research outputs indicate, however, that the humanities, in its various shades, is critical to Africa’s capacity to respond effectively to such problems as security, corruption, political ineptitude, poverty, superstition, and HIV/AIDS, among many other mounting challenges which confront the people of Africa. The vibrancy and resilience of Africa’s cultures, against these and other odds of globalisation episodes in the course of our history, demand the focused attention of academia to exploit their relevance to contemporary issues. This collection provides a comprehensive overview of issues in the humanities at the turn of the 21st century, which create a veritable platform for the global redefinition and understanding of Africa’s rich cultures and traditions. Such areas covered include ruminations in metaphysics and psychology, pathos and ethos, cinematic and literary connections, and historical conceptualisations.

"Omudile muua ohapo; epangelo liua ohamba". Freely translated, this proverb of the Ovakwanyama of northern Namibia means: "New leaves produce a good shade; the laws of a king are always as good as new". The proverb paints a picture of wisdom to express the dialectical relationship between continuity and change in customary law. Since royal orders are supposed not to change from one king to the next, they are always as good as new, reads the explanatory note to the proverb by the anthropologist Loeb, who recorded the proverb. Traditional authority is like a tree standing on its roots, rooted in the tradition created by the ancestors of the ruler and the community. These roots remain firm, stable and unchanged, not so the concrete manifestation of authority that changes and responds to changes of the environment. This makes that new leaves are produced by the rooted tree. The new leaves are new and old. They are old, because in structure, colour and their capacity to protect by giving shade, they are more or less like the leaves of last year and the year before; they are new because they react to the challenge of seasons. The Shade of New Leaves emerged out of an international conference on the living reality of customary law and traditional governance held in Windhoek in 2004. The conference was organised by the Centre for Applied Social Sciences and the Human Rights and Documentation Centre, both affiliated to the Faculty of Law of the University of Namibia, in co-operation with the Law Departments of the Universities of Bremen, Germany, and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. This book is an exposition of the sociocultural past, present, and futuristic preview of the Emevor-speaking people of the Niger-Delta, Nigeria. The work is the product of the author’s reminiscences and introspection into the historiography, geography, economy, language, education, and the multifarious rich sociocultural milieu of the people. It deals with the traditional customs, beliefs, totems, astronomy, time and event reckoning, marriages, traditional religions, ancestral worship and Christology, oracle divination, obituary and obsequies, initiation into Ehwa womanhood rites and sabbatical fattening of brides, festivals, identity of people, governance, heroes/heroines and modern pacesetters, and the changes provoked by modernity. By using simple language, graphic descriptions, and vivid and clear explanations of the phenomena and events, the author has taken the reader through the maze, as it were, with the needed compass to navigate through these labyrinths.
