Cloning is some of the most exciting science and one of the most keenly fought moral debates of our time. Perfect Copy is a uniquely accessible exploration this most vexed and pressing issue. In 1997 Ian Wilmut and his team announced that they had done what many thought to be impossible. They had cloned a mammal from an adult cell. This breakthrough prompted immediate calls for the new technology of mammalian cloning to be used on humans. Italian fertility specialist Severino Antinori hopes to use cloning 'within two years' to give 200 infertile couples the opportunity to at last become parents. Cloning may also solve, once and for all, the problem of rejection that bedevils transplant surgery. Perhaps it even holds the promise of eternal life. But plans to clone humans have triggered a storm of protest. Scientists including Wilmut, politicians from left and right, and theologians from almost all religions find the idea abhorrent. We cannot possibly decide who is right in this debate unless we have a good understanding of what a human clone is and how one would be created. The rapid developments in technologies -- especially computing and the advent of many 'smart' devices, as well as rapid and perpetual communication via the Internet -- has led to a frequently voiced view which Nicholas Agar describes as 'radical optimism'. Radical optimists claim that accelerating technical progress will soon end poverty, disease, and ignorance, and improve our happiness and well-being. Agar disputes the claim that technological progress will automatically produce great improvements in subjective well-being. He argues that radical optimism 'assigns to technological progress an undeserved pre-eminence among all the goals pursued by our civilization'. Instead, Agar uses the most recent psychological studies about human perceptions of well-being to create a realistic model of the impact technology will have. Although he accepts that technological advance does produce benefits, he insists that these are significantly less than those proposed by the radical optimists, and aspects of such progress can also pose a threat to values such as social justice and our relationship with nature, while problems such as poverty cannot be understood in technological terms. He concludes by arguing that a more realistic assessment of the benefits that technological advance can bring will allow us to better manage its risks in future.

Thomas Pynchon's writing has been widely regarded as an exemplary form of postmodern fiction. It is characterized as genre-defying and enigmatic, as a series of complex and esoteric language games. This study attempts to demonstrate, however, that an oblique yet compelling sense of the "political" Pynchon disappears all too easily under the mantle of postmodernity. Innovative and unsettling discussions of freedom, war, labour, poverty, community, democracy, and totalitarianism are passed over in favour of constrictive scientific metaphors and theoretical play. Against this current, this study analyses Pynchon's fiction in terms of its radical dimension, showing how it points to new directions in the relationship between the political and the aesthetic.
