Excerpt from Personal Declension and Revival of Religion in the Soul That the subject on which this humble volume treats is vastly solemn, and deeply searching, every true believer in Jesus must acknowledge. The existing necessity for such a work has long impressed itself upon the Author's mind. While other and abler writers are employing their pens, either in defending the out-posts of Christianity, or in arousing a slumbering church to an increased intensity of personal and combined action in the great work of Christian benevolence, he has felt that if he might but be instrumental, in ever so humble a way, of occasionally withdrawing the eye of the believer from the dazzling and almost bewildering movements around him, and fixing it upon the state of ms own personal religion, he would be rendering the Christian church a service, not the less needed and important in her present elevated and excited position. Not illustrated. 1847 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. THE LORD, THE KEEPER OF HIS How frequently, clearly, and solemnly does the Holy Ghost unfold this great truth ift, bis word, ttiat salvation is entirely in and of God, irrespective of all worth, worthiness, or power of the creature; and that as the salvation of his covenant people Is supremely and solely his own work, so in every respect it is infinitely worthy of himself. God can do nothing but what harmonises with his own illimUak ble greatness: he can never act below himself. 4 L the productions of his creative power in nature, the events of his directive wisdom in providence, bear the impress, from the smallest to the greatest, of his " eternal power and Godhead." But in salvation, it is supremely and pre-eminently so. Here, the whole Deity shines; here, the entire Godhead is seen; here, Jehovah emerges from the veiled pavilion of his greatness and glory, and by one stupendous exercise of power, and by one august act of grace, and by one ineffable display of love--before which all other revelations of his glory seem to fade away and well-nigh disappear--walks abroad among men in his full-orbed majesty: " And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God." This glorious "tabernacle" that is " with men," what less is it than the manifestation of Jesus in our own nature--God manifest iiT'the flesh? Truly may we say, "His glory is great in our salvation." Is he the only-wise God ?--his salvation must needs be the most profound result of that wisdom. Is he most holy ?--his salvation must be holy. Is he just? his salvation must be Just. Is he gracious...

Excerpt from Personal Soul-Winning No higher honor could be conferred upon the Christian, and no greater privilege be given the believer in Jesus Christ than to be associated with Him in the great and blessed work of bringing a lost world to the knowledge of the truth. "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us," to put us into so great a ministry. It is not possible for every Christian to be a preacher or a teacher in spiritual things, for these are special gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit upon certain believers, even as it hath pleased Him. But there is no Christian, however humble or insignificant he may feel himself, or others esteem him to be, who is not appointed by the Spirit to be a winner of souls. One often wonders whether the honor conferred upon the believer of being a soul-winner is not greater than the conferred gift of teaching or preaching; and whether or not at the last day, when the rewards are distributed, the personal soul-winner will receive as great, if not a greater reward than many a teacher or preacher. Daniel 12:3 (R. V.) is filled with glorious comfort for the man who seeks to turn sinners to God: "And they that be teachers shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars forever and ever." That the individual Christian may be prompted, encouraged, and equipped to do this kind of Personal Soul-Winning work, is the purpose of this book. Its popular or conversational style of address will, it is hoped, enable the book to more thoroughly accomplish its purpose. Excerpt from The Religion of the Soul Notwithstanding the universal conviction that conscience is the supreme tribunal of worthiness and judgment, no creed has ever attempted to explain the might of conscience as the living Voice of God and the supreme source of religion. Though historical creeds possess a large volume of more or less sublime religious aspirations, the absence of the Voice of God in their fundamental doctrines makes it impossible for them to substantiate the spiritual honor of the soul, to establish religious harmony among themselves, and to lead mankind to that godly mutuality which is the desire of every righteous heart. No religious cult or form has any intrinsic value unless it is strictly based on conscience, the sole might and inspiration of religious truth. Conscience is the real temple of religion, where the Voice of God is clearly audible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Revised with nearly half of its material newly written, "Fresh Encounter" is a discussion of how God brings spiritual revival to individuals and the church.

Excerpt from Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul: Illustrated in a Course of Serious and Practical Addresses, Suited to Persons of Every Character and Circumstance; With a Devout Meditation, or Prayer, Subjoined to Each Chapter The several hints given in the first chapter of this Treatise which contains a particular plan of the design, render it unnecessary to introduce it with a long preface. My much-honoured friend, Dr. Watts, had laid the scheme, especially of the former part. But as those indispositions, with which (to the unspeakable grief of the churches) God has been pleased to exercise him, had forbid his hopes of being able to add this to his many labours of love to im mortal souls, he was pleased, in a very affectionate and importunate manner, to urge me to undertake it. And I bless God, with my whole heart, not only that he hath carried me through this delightful task, (for such indeed I have found it, ) but also that he hath spared that worthy and amiable person to see it accomplished, and given him strength and spirit to review so considerable a part of it. His appro bation, expressed in stronger terms than modesty will permit me to repeat, encourages me to hope that it is executed in such a manner as may by the divine blessing, render it of some general ser vice. And I the rather hope it will be so, as it now comes abroad into the world, not only with my own prayers and his, but also with those of many other pious friends, which I have been particularly careful to engage for its success.
