The exploration and interpretation of sedimentary rocks on the Martian surface requires a comparative approach, guided in part by insights acquired through analysis of analogous rocks on Earth. Mission results over the past decade have demonstrated that a diverse suite of sediments and sedimentary rock exists on the surface of Mars that represent eolian, fluvial, and possibly lacustrine environments.
