The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has a long and successful record of poverty reduction. As incomes rise, the PRC’s new poverty reduction strategy needs to treat poverty as multidimensional, reinvigorate rural development, develop an integrated rural–urban poverty strategy, and include the vulnerable segments of the population in poverty policy. This report delves into the questions: how much fiscal support is needed to finance social services and protection, and how much should be shouldered by individuals and households? It focuses on vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, young children of rural migrants, and those whose access to health care is jeopardized by urbanization and aging.
This book provides a systematic overview of China's achievements in eliminating absolute poverty by 2020 under current standards. The book is divided into three parts: The first part is a study of major policy practices with distinctive characteristics in China's poverty alleviation practices; the second part is a study of China's international cooperation in poverty alleviation; the third part is a study of China's poverty alleviation by international scholars from the perspective of international cooperation and international comparison. These reports pay attention to China's achievements and experiences in poverty alleviation and reflect on how to strengthen cooperation with China in poverty alleviation.
This report summarizes the experience and lessons learned in a community-driven development pilot project in the People's Republic of China from 2006 to 2009. The involvement of government and nongovernment organizations, innovative project implementation mechanisms, capacity building, and targeting of vulnerable groups were all instrumental in the success of the project, which had a positive impact on individual and community well-being, on the provision of local government services, and in reducing poverty. The report also discusses challenges that arose during the project that will have to be addressed before the community-driven development approach is more widely implemented in the country and elsewhere in Asia.

The economies of the People's Republic of China and India have seen dramatic growth in recent years. As their respective successes continue to reshape the world's economic landscape, noted Chinese and Indian scholars have studied the two countries' development paths, in particular their rich and diverse experiences in such areas as education, information technology, local entrepreneurship, capital markets, macroeconomic management, foreign direct investment, and state-owned enterprise reforms. Drawing on these studies, ADB has produced a timely collection of lessons learned that serves as a valuable refresher on the challenges and opportunities ahead for developing economies, especially those in Asia and the Pacific.
