El problema de la paz es tan complejo como difícil. No sólo hay obstáculos prácticos, sino también dificultades teóricas. No es posible valorar correctamente el problema del otro sin un conocimiento de su cultura-conocimiento que no puede alcanzarse sin amor- de ahí la importancia de la interculturalidad. La paz de la humanidad depende de la paz entre las culturas. Este libro quiere ser una contribución para enfrentarse a este problema. La interculturalidad pone en cuestión los mitos dominantes del statu quo actual, pero nos lleva a una relatividad liberadora. La humanidad se encuentra ahora frente a una encrucijada de dimensiones históricas. Éste es el verdadero desafío de la llamada globalización: o la civilización tecno-científica es superior a toda otra cultura y, por tanto, está llamada a imponerse, o existen también otras culturas que permiten igualmente al hombre alcanzar su plenitud y su felicidad.
Este volumen contiene una selección de artículos sobre la traducción literaria que fueron presentados durante la Conferencia Internacional «Traducción e Intercambio Cultural en la Época de la Globalización», celebrada en el mayo de 2006 en la Facultad de Filología de la Universidad de Barcelona. La Conferencia fue organizada por el grupo de investigación del CRET «Traducción e interculturalidad», de la Universidad de Barcelona. El volumen incluye una muestra representativa del múltiple y variado debate en las lenguas española, portuguesa, catalana e inglesa en torno a la traducción literaria en Europa y América (América Latina, EEUU, Canadá). Además, se abordan también otras cuestiones traductológicas de índole general. El «Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia» español ha tenido a bien financiar tanto la Conferencia como la antología dentro del marco del Proyecto de Investigación BFF2003-002216.
Many women throughout the world face the challenge of confronting an unexpected or an unwanted pregnancy, yet these experiences are often shrouded in silence. An Open Secret draws on personal interviews and medical records to uncover the history of women’s experiences with unwanted pregnancy and abortion in the South American country of Bolivia. This Andean nation is home to a diverse population of indigenous and mixed-race individuals who practice a range of medical traditions. Centering on the cities of La Paz and El Alto, the book explores how women decided whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies and the medical practices to which women recurred in their search for reproductive health care between the early 1950s and 2010. It demonstrates that, far from constituting private events with little impact on the public sphere, women’s intimate experiences with pregnancy contributed to changing policies and services in reproductive health in Bolivia.
We are living in a time when social and political authoritarianism appear to be gaining ground around the world. This book presents the democratic practices, spaces and processes that engage directly with the theoretical assumptions advanced by the epistemologies of the South, summoning other contexts and empirical realities that attest to the possibility of a renewal and deepening of democracy beyond the liberal and representative canon, which is embedded within a world capitalist system. The chapters in this book put forward the ideas of demodiversity, of high-intensity democracy, of the articulation between representative democracy and participatory democracy as well as, in certain contexts, between both these and other forms of democratic deliberation, such as the communitarian democracy of the indigenous and peasant communities of Africa, Latin America and Asia. The challenge undertaken in this book is to demand utopia, imagining a post-abyssal democracy that permits the democratizing, decolonizing, decommodifying and depatriarchalizing of social relations. This post-abyssal democracy obliges us to satisfy the maximum definition of democracy and not the minimum, transforming society into fields of democratization that permeate the structural spaces of contemporary societies.
