This book describes the type and condition of playground equipment in community parks in the United States, and indicates the current status of safety of that environment. The results are then compared to play theories to explore the ways the environment stimulates play. Appropriate suggestions for change are made. Chapters cover the following topics: (1) the national survey of community park playground equipment; (2) results of the survey; (3) location, accessibility and equipment on park playgrounds; (4) swings, slides, and climbing equipment; (5) rotating, spring rocking, and seesaw equipment; (6) sand play containers, wading pools, signs, trees, and pathways; (7) litigation and playgrounds; and (9) plan of action: reflections and recommendations. Appendices include the instruments of the surveys conducted for this study. (JD)
