This book describes the century-long emergence and battle to protect drivers and occupants of off-road and on-road vehicles from crush-related injuries from rollovers. Deaths and serious injuries have been associated with vehicle overturns that involve tractors, other motorized machinery, automobiles, and small vehicles. It took more than a century to attend to much of this epidemic of death and disabling injury that resulted from these overturns. This book argues that a key factor in this response was epidemiology that reported rollover-related deaths and engineering revisionism that moved responses from “blame the victim” to rollbars to prevent the deaths.
Explores practical selection criteria for bridge-pier scour countermeasures; guidelines and specifications for the design and construction of those countermeasures; and guidelines for their inspection, maintenance, and performance evaluation. Produced along with the report is an interactive version of the countermeasure selection methodology, which defines the proper conditions for the use of each specific countermeasure, and a reference document that contains detailed laboratory testing results and translations of three German "Code of Practice" documents.

The Symposium on Effective Highway Accident Countermeasures was held in Washington, D.C., on June 12-14, 1990. The Symposium was hosted by the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Symposium's objectives were to identify the most effective and practical short-term (within 2 years) countermeasures to highway accidents and to develop strategies for their implementation. The Symposium focused on five areas of highway safety: improving pedestrian safety, reducing accident severity, improving driver performance and control, improving commercial motor vehicle safety, and identifying and improving highway corridors. This publication summarizes the presentations and workshop reports.
Causes of injuries are explored. Injuries are also analyzed on the basis of intent. Injuries are illustrated by age, race, sex, geographic area, urban/rural residence, and per capita income.
In addition to fatalities and injuries resulting from truck involved accidents, excessive costs and delays caused by these accidents and incidents have prompted several operating agencies to consider various strategies to reduce the truck accident/incident problem. This study was undertaken to identify truck accident countermeasures implemented in different areas of the U.S. Issues considered when selecting countermeasures for review in this study included urban freeway volumes of 95,000 vehicles per day or higher, a significant number of trucks in the traffic stream (typically 5% or more), and countermeasures involving road design. The study omitted countermeasures directly related to the vehicle and the driver. This project included the following steps: literature search, telephone survey, and field visits to selected sites. The information collected by this project is intended to assist agencies in identifying, selecting, and implementing truck accident countermeasures. Experiences with the following truck accident countermeasures are included in the report: lane restrictions, separate truck facilities, ramp treatments, truck diversions and bans, reduction of shoulder parking, urban truck inspection stations, incident response management, differential speed limit, increased enforcement, tall barriers, and mainlane treatments.
