In the popular imagination, Mallorca is the archetypal mass tourism resort, one of the world’s pioneers of mass tourism, linking the resources of the Mediterranean to the supply of tourists from northern and western Europe. It is now attempting to better manage the ubiquitous transformational environmental and socio-economic impact of the industry. The book identifies and examines critically the major socio-economic and political forces that have played a significant part in the formation of the industry; the development of tourism as a business and efforts to diversify the tourism product as it move into the uncertainties of the 21st century.
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Thinking about tourism what first comes to most people’s minds probably has to do with sun, beaches, outdoor activities, shopping trips, exotic food and famous sights. Of course, all these components make a place a touristic destination and are going to be used by the tourists. Infrastructure is needed as well as certain adaptation of locals. If all necessary resources are given, what should argue against tourism as a motor of local economy and way of development? But on the other hand, a not successfully or towards sustainability directed management of a touristic destination may cause impacts destroying all these attractions irreparable. Even with all precautions against negative impacts taken, nothing can prevent a community from them. Is the average tourist aware of water being a rare resource, especially in the country of his or her vacations? Is the government of any country willing to restrict income and tax revenue provided by tourism to prevent nature from damage? And can anybody expect concerns about sustainability if a destination just started its rise in international tourism? By writing this assignment I am going to take a closer look on the impacts, which were caused by the development of tourism on the most famous Balearic Island, Majorca. The first chapter will deal with general information about the island, the second one will give an overview about the history of tourism and finally the third chapter will deviate possible and existing economical, social and environmental impacts of tourism on Majorca. Finally I will give a brief conclusion about Majorca as a destination impacted by tourism.
Professor Buswell describes the elements that together form Mallorca's contemporary landscape. Well-illustrated with maps and photographs, this book should be read by all who are inquisitive about what they see around them when they visit the island.
Luisa Wolter examines the travel motivations and interests of natural park visitors to Mallorca with a special focus on sustainable tourism development. The data for the study were collected from tourists in the two natural parks s’ Albufera and Llevant in the North of Mallorca. Based on the results of the analysis, natural area managers can develop new products and marketing strategies that address their very own visitors, contribute to the sustainable development of their region, and influence the visitors’ views and behaviors by raising environmental awareness.
This new book reviews all aspects of the phenomenon of mass tourism. It covers theoretical perspectives (including political economy, ethics, sustainability and environmentalism), the historical context, and the current challenges to domestic, intra-regional and international mass tourism. As tourism and tourist numbers continue to grow around the world, it becomes increasingly important that this subject is studied in depth and best practice applied in real-life situations. Finishing with a speculative chapter identifying potential future trends and challenges, this book forms an essential resource for all researchers and students within tourism studies.
This book addresses the practices of consumption in tourism, a major theme in the sociology of tourism. To date, most tourism analysis has tended to concentrate on the production of tourist space, and assume that tourism consumption simply mirrors the intentions of the producers. By focussing on a number of relevant sub-themes, such as age, gender, religion and sexual orientation, the chapters within this book critically examine such assumptions in terms of the interplay between the production and consumption of tourist spaces, and how patterns of tourism consumption are negotiated on an individual level.
The island of Mallorca (Majorca) is the most famous of the Balearic Islands and is known for its brilliant sunsets, scenic mountains, sandy beaches, rocky coves and rugged coastline. Its medieval architecture stands in the shadows of the islands modern infrastructure. With around 10 million visitors a year - a rising figure ever since the 1950's - tourists touch down on Mallorca for some fun in the sun. While the majority are young Brits, Germans, and Scandinavians heading to the tourist resorts there is much more to the Balearics largest island.
