Life in the countryside, often perceived as either idyllic or depleted, has long been misrepresented. Challenging the stereotypes and myths that surround the idea of rurality, Our Rural Selves interrogates and represents individual and collective memories of childhood in rural landscapes and small towns. Drawing on visual artifacts whose origins range from the early twentieth century to today, such as photographs, films, objects, picture books, and digital games, contributors offer readings of childhood that are geographically, ethnically, and culturally diverse. They examine the memories of Indigenous children, the experiences of back-to-the-land youth, and boom-or-bust childhoods within the petroleum, farming, and fishing industries. Illustrating often neglected and overlooked aspects of adolescence, this collection suggests new ways of studying social connectedness and collective futures. Innovative and revealing in its use of visual studies, autoethnography, and memory-work, Our Rural Selves explores representation, imagination, and what it means to grow up rural in Canada.
Discussions of China’s early twentieth-century modernization efforts tend to focus almost exclusively on cities, and the changes, both cultural and industrial, seen there. As a result, the communist peasant revolution appears as a decisive historical break. Kate Merkel-Hess corrects that misconception by demonstrating how crucial the countryside was for reformers in China long before the success of the communist revolution. In The Rural Modern, Merkel-Hess shows that Chinese reformers and intellectuals created an idea of modernity that was not simply about what was foreign and new, as in Shanghai and other cities, but instead captured the Chinese people’s desire for social and political change rooted in rural traditions and institutions. She traces efforts to remake village education, economics, and politics, analyzing how these efforts contributed to a new, inclusive vision of rural Chinese life. Merkel-Hess argues that as China sought to redefine itself, such rural reform efforts played a major role, and tensions that emerged between rural and urban ways deeply informed social relations, government policies, and subsequent efforts to create a modern nation during the communist period.

College Aspirations and Access in Working Class Rural Communities: The Mixed Signals, Challenges, and New Language First-Generation Students Encounter explores how a working class, rural environment influences rural students’ opportunities to pursue higher education and engage in the college choice process. Based on a case study with accounts from rural high school students and counselors, this book examines how these communities perceive higher education and what challenges arise for both rural students and counselors. The book addresses how college knowledge and university jargon illustrate the gap between rural cultural capital and higher education cultural capital. Insights about approaches to reduce barriers created by college knowledge and university jargon are shared and strategies for offering rural students pathways to learn academic language and navigate higher education are presented for both secondary and higher education institutions.
This book follows on from a symposium that was held in Durban, South Africa in July 2007. The symposium was called "'Seeing for Ourselves': Exploring the Practice of Self-Study in Teaching, Learning and Researching for Social Change". The Durban Symposium, as called in this book, was actually the second in a series of invitational international symposia organized through the second in a series of invitational international symposia organized through the Centre for Visual Methodologies for Social Change in the Faculty of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Committed as it is to the use of visual and other participatory methods within textual research in order to bring about social action, the Centre for Visual Methodologies for Social Change started off its symposia series with "Putting People in the Picture", an event that eventually led to the publication of an edited book, Putting People in the Picture: Visual Methodologies for Social Change (edited by Naydene de Lange, Claudia Mitchell, & Jean Stuart, 2007).
Positionality and researcher reflexivity – how to account for one’s subject position – remain as challenges for new researchers. But they also remain as challenges for experienced researchers, who are often involved in multiple research projects simultaneously. Where Am I in the Picture? sheds light on the idea of researcher positionality through visual methodologies, particularly in the context of studying rurality in Canada, Sweden, and South Africa. The book is intended for new and experienced researchers seeking to decolonize their own perspectives in research in the social sciences and humanities. It incorporates photographs, drawings, and memory work to highlight the social constructedness of what counts as rural. Drawing together compelling narratives from researchers about their positionality in studying rurality, the book highlights a need for greater attention to “where we are in the picture” more broadly. It suggests that when it comes to the rural, researchers need to rethink the interplay of dominant images, insider and outsider perspectives, and what this interplay means in relation to interpretation. Where Am I in the Picture? presents a new vision of how to take into consideration positionality in research.
The self-help groups are practical alternatives to achieve the aims of rural development and to get community involvement in all the rural development programmers. SHG is an organizational setup to disburse micro-finance to the women for the purpose of making them creative women and encouraging them to enter into commercial activities. The work of women should not be restricted to kitchen room only. Now she is coming out from kitchen and showing her ability in each and every sector of economy. She finds pleasure in independent living and also she is enjoying economic independence. Spread of education and faster growth in mass media has awakened the women to get equal justice in society like men. SHGs are intermediates for routing a broad range of government-sponsored development policies and schemes. NGOs and Government have increasingly been adopting SHGs as a strategy to bring women together for their development. This book is based on the minor research project carried out in Chandrapur District. Sample of the study was women self-help groups and the SHG members in Six Talukas of Chandrapur District. 300 SHGs and 200 SHG respondents are evaluated from this study. Monetary and Social evaluation of the women SHGs was the primary objective of the study.
