Excerpt from Our Own Country This volume is designed to supplement regular instruo tion in the geography of the United States. It is not intended to take the place of the teacher, but to strengthen the impression which the teacher has made. All formal instruction in geography should be preceded by systematic and well-directed Observation of the phenom ena of the earth and of the heavens as these phenomena are manifested in the neighborhood in which the children live. The study of the home should be so thorough that the children will have all the elementary ideas which they need in forming adequate conceptions of those portions of the earth and the heavens which lie beyond the range of direct perception. During this process of immediate observation, all the ideas gained should be so connected with plans and maps that the children will be able, through the use of maps, to construct accurately, in their imaginations, the real world as it actually exists. Excerpt from Tales of My Own Country The side street of the Angus town was as grey a thing as could be seen even on this grey dripping day. The houses, thick-walled, small-windowed, sturdily uniform and old-fashioned, contemplated the soaking cobble-stones and the 'causeys' which ran like rivers on either side; the complacent eyes of their dark panes, made yet darker by the potted geraniums whose smouldering red gave no liveliness to a reeking world, stared out, endlessly aloof, upon the discomfort of the occasional passer-by. Under their breath they seemed to be chorusing unanimously the words of St. Paul and saying, "None of these things move me." The dried haddocks, which usually hung on their wooden 'hakes' nailed to the walls, had been brought in, as had the small children whose natural playground was the pavement; chalk-marks made by schoolboys in their various evening games had been obliterated from the flags. Newbiggin Street was a featureless place given over to the sulky elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Our Home and Country By an older civilization than our own upon the susceptible nature of an artist; I am but stating Well known facts; but I think we are onlyjust beginning to be sensible of the deplorable lack of sympathy between our European-bred artists and the average American. Not all that even France can now offer to a young art student from the United States, not all that all Europe can offer him, compensates for the loss of the national quality, which, in works of art, means more than sentiment, more than personal allegiance to the ag, more than the national consciousness that we. Excerpt from His Own Country Miss Bessie, with heightened color, scouted the very idea of such an idea. But the blush lingered on her cheeks. You don't reckon this Doctor Brent can be any kin to me she asked. He didn't say he was kin to the Brents of Brentwood, did he, Colonel? Anyway he can't be very near, for mother and Uncle Hampton were the only Brents of their generation, and poor crazy Cousin Constance and I are the only Brents left in this part of the world now. Excerpt from In Sunflower Land: Stories of God's Own Country And, in the main, very happy and contented are the favored subjects of this prosperous monarch. For twenty-five, fifty and seventy years of experi ence have shown them that he is steady and reli able, faithful to those who call upon him, and never failing those who cultivate him. So these subjects, with such deviation as national and political exigency has prescribed, have gone their ways, content with present abundance and careless of outside comment have lived their lives in their own manner, sung their songs, and cherished their traditions until modern progress came to the fair dominion and knocked at the gate: That was the beginning of the new Missouri and the new Kansas. Whether it destroyed the charm of the older life, or by its benefits atoned for the inva sion, they may say who will. But is it not true that the literature, the poetry, the romance of a country turns to humanity in its simple, original type, and finds its material where the rushing spirit of the century has produced the least efface ment? Excerpt from This Country of Ours the Story of the United States Four years have come and gone since first you asked me to write a Story of the United States lest you should grow up knowing nothing of your own country. I think, how ever, that you are not yet very grown up, not yet too proud and great to read my book. But I hope that you know something already of the history of your own coun try. For, after all, you know, this is only a play book. It is not a book which you need knit your brows over, or in which you will find pages of facts, or politics, and long strings of dates. But it is a book, I hope, which when you lay it down will make you say, I'm glad that I was born an American. I'm glad that I can salute the stars and stripes as my flag. Yes, the flag is yours. It is in your keeping and in that of every American boy and girl. It is you who in the next generation must keep it flying still over a people free and brave and true, and never in your lives do aught to dim the shining splendour of its, silver stars. Excerpt from Life in Prairie Land The following work was commenced with the intention of writing one or two brief sketches descriptive of Life at the West. And until some hundred and fifty pages were written, I never contemplated the possibility of extending them to a volume. At that point, I was so far from having said all I felt, that Ivery willingly re signed myself to the current of my feelings and wrote on. To those who read the volume first, and after ward, in some idle moment, turn back to the preface, I need not say that I have been impelled in every step by love of my theme. That will have been apparent enough to them, without any such declaration. I have loved the West, and it still claims my preference over all other portions of the earth. Its magnitude, its fertili ty, the kindliness of its climate, the variety and excellence of its productions are unrivaled in our own country, if not on the globe. Excerpt from He Played With Thomas: A Story of God's Own Country To this position one of the visiting cow gentlemen, in a perfectly calm and dignified tone, took exception. He pointed out that a tramp without home and money was a necessarily wretched being, whom it would be kindness to put out of his misery. He believed it was the duty of mankind to alleviate pain and suffering, and he knew of no medicine so quick and sure in action as a bullet administered with a steady hand and an unerring eye.
