He was born in the warzone. The invasions of the North Vietnamese Communists had caused total destruction throughout the entirety of his parents village when he was just four years of age. He had witnessed the killings and the brutality of the evil Communists throughout his childhood. After the Fall of Saigon, his family had suffered great hardship from the Vietcong. It was clear that there was no future for the young generation; his family had determined to find ways for their son to escape the Communist regime. He had tried numerous times to escape with no success; nevertheless, God had protected him and he did not get killed or caught by the Vietcong. He finally escaped successfully on his eleventh attempt and his boat was so lucky to get rescued by a German ship in the unforgiving ocean. He settled in the United States of America after years of long waiting in the refugee camp. He has found the life of freedom and dignity in America from the hell of the evil Communists. He has appreciated so much about his new country harboring him and he was determined to serve and help protect the freedom and democracy for his new motherland. He joined the United States Navy and became a sailor, serving multiple deployments. He was very happy and dreamed to become a Navy jet fighter pilot someday. Unfortunately, he got injured while performing his duty. His medical separation from the US Navy saddened his heart and soul. Now he, as a disable veteran, had to fight for survival for himself and his family with two small daughters. He had to return to college and further his education. He overcame all major obstacles and impediments mentally and physically; he graduated from a Doctor of Pharmacy program from Nova Southeastern University. Since then, he has been working as a pharmacist to support his family. He was extremely happy to have another opportunity to serve his patients, his community. However, his old injury continues to aggravate him over the years; nonetheless, he continues to fight to support his family and serve the people he loves.
Life under communism is cruel and inhumane. Commit the smallest political infraction, and the secret police will arrest you. The only ray of hope is the West, but getting out from communism is difficult. Communist countries have a “Berlin Wall” around them. It is a crime to escape by crossing the border illegally, and anyone caught is beaten and imprisoned, sometimes even shot. I was eighteen, and I was living in hell. However, I would rather have died than keep living as a communist slave. This is my story of what happened and how I reached freedom.

Radu Olimpiu Gherghel was born in the city of Timisoara, Romania, in 1943 during a difficult time in his native countrys history. Once a free and sovereign nation, Romania then found itself in the grips of a foe far stronger, more able to destroy the country of his birthCommunism. As the social, economic, political, and governmental structures of Eastern European countries encountered whirlwind changes, free sovereign states were dominated and forced into the Soviet Bloc of nations. During this time, in the summer of 1955, a twelve-year-old boy sat on the stone wall at the entrance to a park in downtown Timisoara, Romania. He glanced up at the clear, blue sky watching the birds flying into the beautiful skies and knowing that he was witnessing a freedom few creatures in this world could ever experiencelet alone a child from Communist Romania. How he yearned to be free to go where he wanted, to be what he wanted, to fly like the birds, and to be free. His dreams and hopes take hold of his imagination; his adventures are real, his experiences unforgettable, and his story true as his quest for freedom begins. Dead Run is the inspiring story of a child who knew the difference between being controlled and being truly free.
Will to Freedom is an eyewitness account of the social and political upheaval that shook Eastern Europe from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s. As an underground resistance fighter, political prisoner, fugitive, and Communist Party official, Egon Balas charts his journey from idealistic young Communist to disenchanted dissident. Attracted by its anti-Nazi stance, Balas joined the Hungarian Communist Party in 1942, after Hungary had entered the war on Hitler’s side. He helped organize work stoppages and distributed antiwar leaflets. In his memoir, he offers a compelling account first of his eventual imprisonment and ordeal under torture and then of his escape and life in hiding. Later, Balas rose to high positions in postwar Romania. Arrested again, this time by the Communist authorities, he spent two years in solitary confinement. Unbroken, he was released after Stalin's death but was never forgiven for his refusal co cooperate in the staging of a show trial. Disenchanted with the regime, Balas started a new life as a self-educated applied mathematician and, after several unsuccessful attempts, was finally able to leave Romania as a Jewish emigrant in the mid-sixties.
When Kent Wong was a young boy, his father, a patriotic Chinese official in the customs office in Hong Kong, joined an insurrection at work and returned with the family to the newly established People’s Republic of China. Hailed as heroes, they settled in the southern city of Canton. But Mao’s China was dangerous and unstable, with landlords executed en-masse and millions dying of starvation during the Great Leap Forward.
I was born in Hungary in 1941. The village of my birth, Sivo, ruined during WWII and later relocated to the flood plane of a little creek in a segregated area of Gordisa, vanished without a trace and forever. The people of my village called themselves "Bəásh." They were known to most Hungarians as Gypsies. Discriminated against as a minority, I was disheartened by the Communist system's failure to integrate my community into Hungarian society. I decided, at age twenty-six to leave my country and to seek freedom in America. Because it was illegal to leave Hungary, my escape was demanding and dangerous. On one hand, if caught during the planning stage of my escape, I would have faced imprisonment and would have been black- listed for life. On the other hand, if caught during crossing the border, I could get killed. Aware of this but encouraged by Ady Endre's poem From the Rill to the Ocean, I told myself "LIVE FREE OR DIE." I now live in Chapel Hill North Carolina, where I share and enjoy freedom with my dear wife Kathy and our freedom- loving dogs, Jesse and Buddy.
The book, "Fearless At Any Cost" sustains a real episode from the life of the author during the 1980's in communist Romania. In a country, where the expansion and public adoration of communism were holy laws. In a country, where contradicting communism and its faithful followers were synonymous with death. In a country, where the spokesmen of religion or of human rights were prosecuted. From this country, I, the author, tried to escape, longing for freedom. My first attempt to escape was unsuccessful. I was caught at the Rumanian border. In this book, I had describe a faithfully all the suffering, the inhuman treatment I was subjected to. The unfair punishment of hard labor only to try to break my spirit, and my desire for freedom. Did they succeed? No. I had tried to escape a second time. Unfortunately, my second time had failed also. This time I wasn't captured, for I had lost myself in a deadly swamp. This deadly swamp was my salvation, so I didn't stand get back into the hands of the murderous communists, and didn't stand in front of another unjust court. This second failed endeavor almost broke my fighting spirit. But what choice did I have? I was gambling with my young life, as a hustler and I risked everything again with a third try. I knew, this third one would be the last. Whether I make it or not, I won't have another chance. For if I fail again, the protecting heroes of communism are going to finish me. At this time, luck was with me. My third attempt was the real thing. I succeeded and I finally achieved my long awaited freedom. In this book, I had described all the pain and suffering my family and I had to endure. Exciting complications, daring actions, overcoming deadly dangers, they are all here. I had described the seven days spent in a locked freight car without any food. All the real events of my escapade. The reader will find in this book every reason to respect freedom. Also, every reason to abhor communism. One can understand how often we are frighteningly close to death and hope redemption only from God. One can understand why thousands upon thousands had risked their life for freedom, and how it is that freedom is wroth all the pain and unjust suffering. In a communist country, to reach for freedom seems as realistic as to reach for the stars. The book: "Fearless At Any Cost" might bring tears into the eyes of the reader, until the happy ending, where he can sigh: "Thank God, after all that suffering he had reached his freedom."
