Excerpt from Our Bishops and Deans, Vol. 2 of 2 There is then all the difference in the world between a literary bishop and a literary dean. The deanery confers the leisure which the bishopric takes away. AS a rule, the deans are more literary than the bishops; but there are bishops whom no deans have ever approached in the domain of letters. In one sense all bishops may courteously be called literary just as barristers are called learned. We suppose that there is no bishop on the bench who has not at least printed a charge or a sermon. Some of these charges are extremely valuable. Any one, for instance, who would examine carefully the whole series of charges delivered, almost synchronically, by Bishop Wilber force and Bishop Thirlwall, would obtain a very accu rate idea Of the History of the Church of England within the last generation. The interest of the history would be none the less because we should have it from two different points of view. What may be called bishops' literature does not, as a rule, count for very much. It is not SO extensive as deans' literature, for the Obvious reason that bishops have not the leisure to be literary. Read this when you are at leisure, said a friend to a dignitary. Excerpt from Our Bishops and Deans, Vol. 1 of 2 My Dear Todd, I do not suppose in dedicating this work to you will endorse all its opinions. On the contrary, I imagine that when next we meet, in travel or at home, there will be some keen discussion on sundry matters connected with these pages. But you, at least, will understand how thoroughly I have striven to be Catholic and impartial, and that this work on contemporary Church history should be free from all party bias. My object has been to give a view of the present state of the Church of England, its condition and its prospects, the great names and the remarkable movements that have emerged within its borders. One of the most extraordinary books ever published. These four volumes record the visions of the famous 19th-century Catholic mystic; Ven. Anne Catherine Emmerich; a nun who was privileged to behold innumerable events of biblical times; going back all the way to the creation of the world. She witnessed the fall of the Angels; the sin of Adam; Noe and the Flood; the lives of St. John the Baptist; St. Anne; St. Joseph; the Blessed Virgin Mary; and St. Mary Magdalen. Also includes the birth; life; public ministry; Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ; as well as the founding of His Church. Besides describing persons; places; events and traditions in intimate detail; Anne Catherine Emmerich also sets forth the mystical significance of these visible realities.
Excerpt from Assault of the Bishop of Western New York Upon the Dean of the General Theological Seminary, and the Dean's Reply Nearly a year ago you and your fellow-deputies gave solemn judgment in the Illinois case. Your per sonal support was given to that judgment, and in so doing you performed a great duty to the Church, or else you did a great wrong. Since that time you have never ceased to hear the accusation of injustice. The Church has been flooded with complaints, and the sympathies of the external public have been invoked. The aggrieved party has had this field to itself. Nobody has replied. In calm dignity or well-restrained disgust, the friends of order and discipline have found their strength in the quietness and confidence which can afford to sit still. Excerpt from The Lives of the Bishops of Minchester, Vol. 1 of 2: From Birinus, the First Bishop of the West Saxons, to the Present Time Previously to entering at large upon the Lives of the Bishops of Winchester, I shall lay before the Reader the promised re-print of Gale's "History of the Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Winchester," which will both serve as an introduction to the Memoirs of the Prelates, and tend to illustrate several passages of the main work. Although this may be considered as a faithful re-print, it will be found that many, both of Gale's and Lord Clarendon's inaccuracies have been corrected.
