Breeding plants to encourage specific traits is usual in agriculture but less common in ornamental horticulture. Daffodils, daylilies, hostas, lilacs, magnolias, and rhododendrons are among the 15 subjects covered by experts in the field. This book is only available through print on demand. All interior art is black and white.
This is a comprehensive revision ofGrowing Media, first published in 1984 and last revised in 2002. Since its first publication the book has been a core text for Horticulture students at TAFE colleges and universities as well as an important reference title.
Ornamental plants are economically important worldwide. Both growers and consumers ask continuously for new, improved varieties. Although there are numerous ornamental species, ornamental plant breeding and plant breeding research is mainly limited to some major species. This book focuses on the recent advances and achievements in ornamental plant breeding. The first part of the book focuses on plant traits and breeding techniques that are typical for ornamental plants. Eminent research groups write these general chapters. For plant traits like flower colour or shape, breeding for disease resistance and vase or shelf life are reviewed. General technical plant breeding chapters deal with mutation breeding, polyploidisation, in vitro breeding techniques and new developments in molecular techniques. The second part of the book consists of crop-specific chapters. Here all economically major ornamental species are handled together with selected representative species from different plant groups (cut flowers, pot plants, woody ornamental plants). In these crop-specific chapters, the main focus is on recent scientific achievements over the last decade.
This collection reviews recent research in ornamentals. Part 1 discusses advances in understanding plant physiology, genetic diversity and breeding techniques. Part 2 surveys advances in cultivation techniques in areas such as nutrition, irrigation, protected cultivation and pest management.
Describes the diseases, pests, and other troubles that assail nearly 500 genera of ornamental plants grown outdoors, under glass, or in the home. Carefully explains, for each plant, when and how to use the most effective fungicides, insecticides, and other control materials and practices.

Traditionally, bedding plants are those plants used to provide color in summer garden beds. Although some writers include any herbaceous plant started under controlled environmental conditions and sold for outdoor use, embracing a number of fruit and vegetable crops, in this book ornamental bedding plants include tender herbaceous ornamental annuals and biennials only. As with other titles in this series, the aim of this book is to present scientific principles that underlie production practices. The author discusses traditional and plug methods of production, the latter having revolutionized mass market production during the last decade. The principles of propagation and growing on, including the role of nutrition and media, temperature, light, supplemental carbon dioxide and growth regulators, are described. Aspects of postproduction, diseases and pests, and mechanization, are also considered. There is also an appendix providing production guidelines for 15 major bedding plant species, including begonia, impatiens, petunia, marigolds and pansies. Written by one of America's foremost horticultural scientists and writers, the book is invaluable for plant producers or growers, as well as for students of ornamental or amenity horticulture.
Across civilizations and over the ages, attractive plant variation has been assembled and organised into gardens for aesthetics and recreation. In India, interest in gardening has increased progressively, particularly among the ‘home gardeners’. In 14 chapters, ‘Ornamental Plants for Gardening’ documents the myriad variation available in diverse categories of ornamentals plants (annuals; roses; chrysanthemums; tuberose; bulbous plants; shrubs & climbers; cactus & succulents; hedges, edges, topiary & bonsai; and turf grass) for enhancing the attractiveness of both small and large gardens. Theoretical and practical guidance is provided about varieties; soil bed preparation; cultural practices; irrigation; fertilization; disease, pest and weed control; preservation of seeds & other forms of propagation units. Each chapter has been authored by expert/s in the relevant area and bears the seal of authenticity. It is our hope that the book will meet the information requirements of the academic community, students and all those interested in practical gardening.
A book which deals with 41 crop chapters, 30 dealing only with common ornamental plants such as Aglaonema, Alstroemeria, Araucaria, Begonia, Bellis, Bougainvillea, Canna, Catharanthus, Codiaeum, Columnea, Dieffenbachia, Euphorbia, Ficus, Fuchsia, Geranium & Pelargonium, Hedera, Holmskioldia, Impatiens, Ixora, Lathyrus, Monstera, Mussaenda, Ornamental Banana, Petunia, Philodendron, Primula, Saintpaulia, Spathiphyllum, Streptocarpus and Viola; and 11 groups of ornamentals such as Annuals with 126 genera, Bromeliads with 34 genera, Cacti with 105 genera, Carnivorous Ornamentals with 12 genera, Ferns and Allied Plants with 53 genera, Flowering Indoor Plants with 188 genera, Foliage Plants with 382 genera, Lawn with 37 genera, Ornamental Gingers with 7 genera, Proteaceous Ornamentals with 12 genera and Succulents other than Cacti with 192 genera. Each crop is detailed with their name derivations, origin, a brief history and uses; botanical description; methods of propagation including micropropagation; classification, species and varieties; cultural practices; manipulation of growth and flowering; postharvest management; and insect-pests, diseases and physiological disorders, supported with succinct account of significant scientific works carried out worldwide. The book is written in a very lucid manner. This book is written to fill up the gap between Cut Flowers and Traditional & Loose Flowers, just to acquaint the people [flower growers, horticultural development officers & landscapers, teachers, professors, scientists, and students (B.Tech., M.Sc. and Ph.D.) engaged in pursuit of floriculture and landscaping] about various other important ornamentals worldwide. This has been prepared in a way to meet all the requirements for cultivating these crops with full success.
