Excerpt from Original Illustrations of English Constitutional History Teachers of Constitutional History have often asked for a single volume of selected documents suitable to the needs of the ordinary student. This book is an attempt to meet that demand. It was planned some years ago: but my transference from Oxford to Glasgow and the preoccupations of a busy life have stood in the way of an earlier publication. My desire has been to choose a few leading documents and certain groups of documents illustrating important subjects, to quote these, so far as space would permit, in their entirety, and to explain passages in them by reference to extracts from other authoritative sources. Over such a vast field naturally the choice has been difficult. Many of the charters and statutes to be selected are sufficiently obvious; but beyond these probably no two teachers of the subject would compile identical lists. This volume contains but a small number of documents, most of which are also in Adams and Stephens' "Select Documents of English Constitutional History." Professor Medley's volume has, in fact, when differences in type and size of page are taken into consideration, only about half the bulk of Adams and Stephens' collection. Professor Medley has, however, given greater emphasis to certain topics, such, for example, as the form of parliamentary writs and the union with Ireland. The collection contains no documents beyond 1800; the earlier documents are given in Latin, without English translation.

Excerpt from Select Charters and Other Illustrations of English Constitutional History: From the Earliest of Times to the Reign of Edward the First I have poinwd out in the introductory chapter my reasonfl for not going further than the reign of Edward I. The later history is rather a history of politics than of polity, and has to be illustrated by a very difl'erent sort of documents. A more consistent supplement or companion to this volume would be a comparative assortment of corresponding Origines of the other constitutions of Europe. This is a branch of study without which the student cannot fully realise either the peculiar characteristics of his own national polity, or the deep and wide basis which it has in common with those of the modern nations of the Continent. To have furnished however in this volume, even the bare texts of the chief constitutional monuments of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Scandinavia, would have obliged me to alter the plan altogether; nor could the comparative Constitutional History of Europe be illustrated at all thoroughly on the same scale.
