The Chinese art collection of the Lee Kong Chian Art Museum, National University of Singapore, is presented in this catalogue published to commemorate the Museum's official opening in August 1990. There are some 540 plates (350 in colour) giving prominent display to the collection, which has been organised into four main areas of Chinese art - Ceramics, Bronze, Archaic Jade, and Painting and Calligraphy. The ceramics section is the most extensive, covering some 6,000 years of Chinese history and representing a fairly complete cross-section of the various types of ceramic ware found through the millennia. Around 80 per cent of these pieces were acquired in the last six years, in the light of recent archaeological discoveries. Many of these are comparable to those found in famous collections the world over. There is also a brief introductory essay on each of the four sections.
Our object in producing this book is to supply information about Chinese art that is at once authoritative and introductory. To many it may seem curious that no previous volume of the kind exists ; but to those who know the extreme difficulty of a detailed study of even one part of Chinese art, with its enormous periods and its close relationship to Eastern ideas, it may rather seem curious that anyone should attempt such a summary. We should not have given way to the desire to make such a book had we not known how valuable it would be if properly produced, and had we not felt that we had hit upon the right plan. -- Preface.
This book appeared mid-way between the two world wars. Hungary and Turkey had lost vast amounts of territory, and the reader, travelling by rail or road, constantly crossing old and new frontiers, sees many signs of the devastation caused by war. Not deterred, Baedeker advises his readers to tour the delightful coast of Croatia by steamer, landing at choice places such as Dubrovnik and Split. He also writes a section about Albania which, in those days, was only just opening up to tourism. The (German) reader might have been somewhat put off by the size of the medicine chest he is advised to carry (malaria and bed bugs being a problem!) and by the mention of indifferent food and basic beds. This book gives an intriguing insight into travel to a fascinating, if war-torn, part of Europe in those days.
