This is an overview of recording principles, materials aspects, and applications of rewritable optical storage. Elements of data recording, including mark formation, eraseability, direct overwrite strategies, data quality and data stability are explained and extensively discussed. Throughout the book, a mark formation model is described and used to back-up measurement results and support the discussed applications. High-speed and dual-layer recording are analyzed in depth, with proposals to achieve higher performance.
Multimedia Systems discusses the basic characteristics of multimedia operating systems, networking and communication, and multimedia middleware systems. The overall goal of the book is to provide a broad understanding of multimedia systems and applications in an integrated manner: a multimedia application and its user interface must be developed in an integrated fashion with underlying multimedia middleware, operating systems, networks, security, and multimedia devices. Fundamental characteristics of multimedia operating and distributed communication systems are presented, especially scheduling algorithms and other OS supporting approaches for multimedia applications with soft-real-time deadlines, multimedia file systems and servers with their decision algorithms for data placement, scheduling and buffer management, multimedia communication, transport, and streaming protocols, services with their error control, congestion control and other Quality of Service aware and adaptive algorithms, synchronization services with their skew control methods, and group communication with their group coordinating algorithms and other distributed services.
Since the start of the computer era, information users have been restricted by inadequate and expensive data storage. The development of solid state memory, soft storage media (floppy disk drives), drum memory drives and fixed disk drive mechanisms have improved data storage and retrieval, reducing the cost of information to under $10 per megabyte for large storage devices. The introduction of laser technology and the development of optical data storage now makes tremendous amounts of data available to users. Optical disc drives can be accessed as peripheral devices by most stand alone micro-computers at a cost of less than $.30 per megabyte of information. Although the cost per megabyte is low, the cost per work station can run $1,500 to $2,500 (or more) per year. Optical storage devices and the data bases released in optical format can be: (1) too expensive for addition to individual work stations or (2) under utilized in a single user environment or (3) difficult to manage when two or more users share a single work station. Current networking strategies have the potential to reduce data costs even more by allowing data storage devices to be shared by multiple users. This thesis evaluates the possibility of combining Optical Storage Technology with the data sharing properties of a Local Area Network (LAN) to solve these three problems. (kr).
This book presents principles and applications to expand the storage space from 2-D to 3-D and even multi-D, including gray scale, color (light with different wavelength), polarization and coherence of light. These actualize the improvements of density, capacity and data transfer rate for optical data storage. Moreover, the applied implementation technologies to make mass data storage devices are described systematically. Some new mediums, which have linear absorption characteristics for different wavelength and intensity to light with high sensitivity, are introduced for multi-wavelength and multi-level optical storage.
