Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Painting on Metal In 1898 the writer put out a little book of specifications for painting on structural mental, which has been received with considerable favor; but the last edition (of two) is now out of print and it has seemed desirable to reprint the specifications and to add such remarks as further experience the suggested. The specifications themselves are almost unchanged; but some work has recently been done which exceeds in excellence and thoroughness anything heretofore described, and it seems well to given somewhat detailed account of it, which will be done in proper course. Uncombined metallic iron is so rare, as a natural mineral, that practically there is no such thing. It is found chiefly as an oxide, though carbonates, silicates, and other salts abound and in particular the sulphide, pyrite, is very widely distributed. It may be said that the coloring-matter of most of the dark-colored minerals and rocks is mainly iron. Metallic iron is obtained from the ore by using the most powerful chemical agencies and it constantly tends to go back into combination; when it does this by natural means the product is termed rust. Usually rust is hydrated oxide of iron, mixed with more or less carbonate, and often with sulphate, sulphide, chloride, or other salts of iron. The common cause of rust is the action of air containing moisture and acids, especially carbonic acid; and to prevent it we must exclude water and gases. This is very difficult, but has been attempted in many ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Enamelling on Iron and Steel: With Historical Notes on the Use of Enamel The manufacture of enamelled ware is carried on to greater extent in Germany and France than else where. This treatise is from the pen of a German technologist of iwide experience in enamel works, and who is now the chief Chemist and director of large works in the French centre of the industry. The book deals more especially with the process of enamelling hollow - ware. It gives a description of the raw material, used in enamelling; it explains the action and the cfiect of each substance, and states the chemical combinations which take place. A number Of mixtures are given for Obtaining given eeects or colourings. The process of enamelling is followed up in detail from the mixing, melting, and grinding of the enamel components; the annealing and pickling of the sheets and castings; the appli cation Oi the enamel; the burning, decorating, etc. It also compares utensils made of enamelled ware with similar ones made Of nickel and aluminium. The book abounds in instructive matter which throws much light on the intricacies Of a branch of industry in which very few people are posted, and it is hoped that this English edition will be found. Excerpt from Enamelling: A Comparative Account of the Development and Practice of the Art This is not a book for the learned, but for artists, craftsmen, students, and lovers of enamelling. As to the history of the subject, I know enough to assume no personal authority upon dates and derivations. All I have set myself to do, so far as they are concerned, is to put into handy, readable, and easily intelligible shape the gist of what I have learnt from Kondakow, Von Falke, Franks, Labarte, and other learned but less helpful specialists. As to the practice of the art, I may claim a closer acquaintance with technique, with vitreous colour, and especially with design, than belongs to the usual equipment of the scholar; and I have tried, not so much to map out with impossible precision the direct but in any case very problematical development of enamelling, as to find out precisely where we are, to take, as it were, stock of past accomplishment, with a view always to fresh enterprise in art and workmanship. None but a rather dense or a very self-satisfied devotee of modernity can help seeing the need of some such preliminary to original work.
