I asked myself why Frankfurt was so successful and if it may still develop, but I could not answer these questions. The main topic of this research paper is to answer these questions. At the beginning of my research paper, I would like to describe the location of the economic area of Frankfurt-Rhein-Main and consider which cities are members of this economic area. I will explain important location factors of the tertiary sector and examine Frankfurt am Main regarding the present location factors. I will focus on Frankfurt because it is the most significant city in the economic area. Afterwards, I will analyse the economic structure of Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Rhein-Main and compare them with the structure in the past. While analysing the current economic structure, I will elaborate significant branches in the economy of Frankfurt. At the end of this work, I will try to realize a trend and give a prognosis. I will conclude by answering the central issue, why the economic area could be so successful and if the potential may be exploited. Frankfurt am Main is the city in Frankfurt-Rhein-Main with the highest importance. Almost one third of the gross domestic product is generated in Frankfurt am Main. It is not the only city contributing to economic performance. Other cities are also contributing more than five billion euros to the total gross domestic product. Nevertheless, the economic area still depends on Frankfurt because of the high share of the economic performance. To sum up, we can say Frankfurt fulfils many important location factors that com-panies of the tertiary sectors are looking for. In the past decade, place marketing, country marketing and city marketing have enjoyed an increase in recognition, especially as countries and locations have been spending more money to encourage firms to locate their offices, and plant locations in the place marketer's area. This is reflected in a growing number of associations, literature, media coverage and educational courses offered. The aim of the present study is to evaluate current literature in order to understand the importance of place marketing in general, and marketing of the Rhine Main Region, as Germany's most cosmopolitan region, in particular. For an international context, Hong Kong and Los Angeles are used as exemplary competitors. For Los Angeles is one of the United States most powerful cities and Hong Kong represents the gateway to China. However, the focus of the investigation is on a B2B perspective in the marketing of the Rhine Main Region. In literature and in practice, place marketing strategies vary from very simple to very sophisticated. After the creation of a theoretical framework, in which the author examines place marketing from the perspective of the marketer, and that of the business customer, the author puts the whole set into practice with help of the Rhine Main Region, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. In the final conclusion, she assesses the place marketing activities of the aforementioned competitors, and tries to rank them according to their current performance.

The overarching research topic addressed in this book is the complex and multifaceted interaction between infrastructural accessibility/connectivity of city-regions on the one hand and knowledge generation in these city-regions on the other hand. To this end, the book brings together chapters analysing how infrastructural accessibility is related to changing patterns of business location of knowledge-intensive industries in city-regions. The chapters in this book specifically dwell on recent manifestations of and developments in the accessibility/knowledge-nexus, with a particular metageographical focus on how this materializes in major city-regions. In the different chapters, this shifting relation is broached from different perspectives (seaports, airports, brainports), at different scales (ranging from global-scale analyses to case studies), and by adopting a variety of methodologies (straddling the wide variety of methodological approaches currently adopted in human geography research). Researchers contributing to this edited volume come from different scholarly backgrounds (sociology, human geography, regional planning), which allows for a varied treatise of this research topic.
City-regions are areas where the daily journeys for work, shopping and leisure frequently cross administrative boundaries. They are seen as engines of the national economy, but are also facing congestion and disparities. Thus, all over the world, governments attempt to increase problem-solving capacities in city-regions by institutional reform and a shift of functions. This book analyses the recent reforms and changes in the governance of city-regions in France, Germany and Italy. It covers themes such as the impact of austerity measures, territorial development, planning and state modernisation. A new 21st century urban phenomenon is emerging: the networked polycentric mega-city region. Developed around one or more cities of global status, it is characterized by a cluster of cities and towns, physically separate but intensively networked in a complex spatial division of labour.
