The attractive village of Mansfield Woodhouse was originally rural, but from the nineteenth century many of its inhabitants operated framework knitting machines for a living. Then, in 1903, the opening of Sherwood Colliery saw a great influx of new workers and a consequent building boom to accommodate them. A railway station reached the village in 1875, and trams followed in 1906 allowing the population greater freedom of movement. Pictures in the book include several of the trams and tramway, the Royal Hotel, the Angel Inn, Clerkson's Hall, Mansfield and Sherwood Collieries, the mines rescue station and Woodhouse Castle.
