The field report looks at the economic developments and regional industrial growth with the discovery of oil. It also discusses the different implications on regional political relations as a result of the quantity and geographical territories in which the oil was found. More specifically, the paper attempts a legal-empirical analysis of production sharing contracts in the Indonesian petroleum industry.
The main purpose of this study is to analyse the role of foreign investment in the search for oil in the Philippines. In this respect, it analyses the outlook, views, conceptions and preconceptions of the Philippine Government, the Philippine Congress, private enterprise and the public toward private foreign investment in the field of oil exploration. The Philippines was chosen as a case study because of its somewhat unique position of being about the only country in the region which does not have any of the big international oil companies looking for oil within its territory, especially at a time when these same companies are making intensive explorations for oil elsewhere in the region.

Of the four types of the mutually independent as well as interdependent economic relationships between Japanese corporations and Southeast Asian countries - trade, licensing, direct investment and indirect investment - this paper concentrates on direct investment and trade. Section II briefly explain sources of data and research methodology employed. Section III shows the results of the investigation, followed by observations and analyses in Section IV with a concluding section on trends, based on research on foreign corporations in Singapore's manufacturing sector. Attention will be paid not so much on China's relations with individual Southeast Asian countries, as on the role and importance of the region in China's overall foreign policy. The intention is to highlight certain general themes rather than present a detailed analysis of evolving bilateral relationships. Southeast Asia cannot of course be considered as a unified or homogenous entity. In fact, its special relevance to Chinese foreign policy lies not simply in its proximity to China, but especially in the variety of political systems and diplomatic alignments which it compromises. As a microcosm of the international system, Southeast Asia reflects China's policies and attitudes not only to the regional subsystem but also to the Third World as a whole and to the global balance of power.
