Excerpt from Observations on the Nature, Extent, and Effects of Pauperism This Pamphlet was first published in the year 1820, since which time I attended six months as a County Magistrate of Middlesex at the Worship-Street Police Office, and I have had more than two years of uninterrupted experience in addition as a Police Magistrate at the Lambeth-Street Office. My additional experience has confirmed my opinion of the correctness of all I have advanced in the following pages. I think I cannot better illustrate the effects of the Poor Laws than by the following anecdote, which I once heard from a gentleman connected with Guy's Hospital.
