The Navy's Tactical Aircrew Combat Training System (TACTS) provides the instrumentation necessary to record in-flight performance of aircrews during air-to-air combat training. Data recorded on TACTS has been an important source of information for the development of objective flight performance criteria. This paper discusses research related to the development and application of in-flight measures of air combat performance. Procedures for systematic development of aircrew performance measures are identified and discussed. A generic methodology is proposed which will eventually lead to a prescriptive model for performance measurement system development. Some of the many applications of objective flight performance criteria include training progress evaluation, training methodology and effectiveness studies, and learning acquisition and transfer studies.
All three military services are developing automated human performance measurement systems fore aviation training devices and research on human performance. The purpose of this study was to create a set of aircrew-system performance measurement guidelines for research based on a review of current practice, and the measurement experience and technical judgement of the investigators. A subjective analysis of common measurement requirements among flight tasks for all phases of military aviation was conducted. The selection of system state variables would be dictated by the individual research problem, but guidelines for sampling, measure segmentation, and selection of transforms to create measurement were developed for common flight tasks and measurement problems. Performance measurement issues in system design, training, and automated performance measurement system design were discussed. FORTRAN program listings for common transforms and specialized multivariate data analyses for selecting and constructing measurement from empirical data were appended. Use of the illustrated techniques was recommended, as was the need to update these techniques as measurement experience accrues. Data from subjective reports, objective performance measures, and physiological studies indicate that flight training per se places a great deal of stress on the trainee. In military flight training additional stresses are involved that may markedly increase the importance of reaction to threat of physical harm. The paper reports effort to develop measures of reaction to physical harm threat and measures of change in confidence in ability to cope with that threat for use in the secondary selection process in U.S. Army aviation.
