The purpose of this study was to evaluate sports nutrition knowledge and experiences with registered dietitians amongst collegiate student-athletes across NCAA Divisions I, II, and III. A total of 171 student-athletes from 13 academic institutions with NCAA sanctioned varsity athletic programs participated. Five Division I, 5 Division II, and 3 Division III institutions are represented. A questionnaire consisting of the following components was administered: nutrition knowledge, feelings towards sports nutrition statements, sources of nutrition information, participant characteristics and demographics, and sports nutrition experience. Overall, the sample achieved a mean Nutrition Knowledge Score (NKS) of 61.22% ± 12.57. There was no significant difference in knowledge scores across NCAA Divisions (F = .385, p = .681), however, female participants scored significantly higher than males (F = 6.313, p = .008). Approximately 82.4% (n = 141) of participants indicated that having a dietitian/nutritionist on their team's staff does or would help them in achieving a healthy diet, and 81.8% (n = 140) responded that having a dietitian/nutritionist on staff does or would help them in improving their athletic performance. Collectively, participants responded they would be most likely to consult a dietitian/nutritionist over other resources when obtaining current information regarding nutrition. Results indicate there is still a need for further sports nutrition education. Additionally, participants' perceive that having a dietitian on their athletic staff would be advantageous for obtaining nutrition information and in achieving a healthier diet and improved performance.
Abstract: Prior literature suggests that athletes' post-exercise fueling may not adequately support recovery, which may be due in part to limited nutrition knowledge of their energy and macronutrient needs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutrition knowledge among NCAA collegiate athletes and evaluate differences according to gender, sport type, and grade classification. Athletes were invited to complete a 10-item web-based survey, adapted from the validated 49-SNKI. A total of 28 athletes (female, n = 26; male, n = 2) completed the nutrition knowledge survey. Results indicated that the mean nutrition knowledge score of all participants was 59% (lowest score being 20% and highest score being 100%). No statistically significant differences in nutrition knowledge scores were observed between athletes based on grade, sport, or major. The results of this study provide support for the potential need of a nutrition education program to support NCAA Division I collegiate athlete’s knowledge regarding the nutrients needed to support optimal fueling for recovery, performance, and health.
Objectives: Athlete0́9s nutritional habits and knowledge can directly affect their performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the nutritional habits and knowledge of the Division I collegiate football player. Methods: The participants of this study are male Division I college football players at Utah State University. The athletes included 45 players ranging from 18-26 and include freshman through seniors. Results: Over eighty six percent of the athletes were unaware that a nutritionist was readily available to them. Sixty percent of the athletes were interested in meeting with the nutritionist. Forty percent of the athletes ate at a fast-food restaurant daily while 31.5% ate at these restaurants three to five days a week. Fifty one percent of the athletes answered 0́−yes0́+ to trying to 0́−gain weight0́+ while 40% answered 0́−no0́+. Over forty six percent of the athletes rely on 0́−strength coaches0́+ for guidance and 25.5% for teammates &/or friends & family. Conclusion: Continued research on dietary interventions would be helpful to determine the ideal way to improve nutrition knowledge on an individual and team basis. Given the proper guidance, the team would be able to see the benefits of proper nutrition and dietary habits both on and off the field.
