Integrated Environmental Technologies for Wastewater Treatment and Sustainable Development provides comprehensive and advanced information on integrated environmental technologies and their limitations, challenges and potential applications in treatment of environmental pollutants and those that are discharged in wastewater from industrial, domestic and municipal sources. The book covers applied and recently developed integrated technologies to solve five major trends in the field of wastewater treatment, including nutrient removal and resource recovery, recalcitrant organic and inorganic compounds detoxification, energy saving, and biofuel and bioenergy production for environmental sustainability. The book provides future directions to young researchers, scientists and professionals who are working in the field of bioremediation and phytoremediation to remediate wastewater pollutants at laboratory and field scale, for sustainable development. - Illustrates the importance of various advanced oxidation processes in effluent treatment plants - Describes underlying mechanisms of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell technologies for the degradation and detoxification of emerging organic and inorganic contaminants discharged in wastewater - Highlights the reuse and recycling of wastewater and recovery of value-added resources from wastewater - Focuses on recent advances and challenges in integrated environmental technologies, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell, microbial electrochemical-constructed wetlands, biofilm reactor-constructed wetland, and anammox- microbial fuel cell technology for sustainable development - Illustrates the importance of microbes and plants in bio/phytoremediation and wastewater treatment
Analyzes the evolution of contemporary art in Chile from 1973 to 2007. This edition reproduces more than 500 color images of works by 74 contemporary artists (selected by editor Mosquera) including names such as: Juan Downey, Carlos Arias, (Santiago, Chile, 1964); Juan Castillo, (Antofagasta, 1952); Eugenio Dittborn, (Santiago, Chile, 1943); Paz Errzuriz, (Santiago, Chile, 1944); Volupsa Jarpa, (Rancagua, 1971); Carlos Leppe, (Santiago, Chile, 1952); and Carolina Ruff, (Santiago, Chile, 1973), as well as younger generation artists. The artists are presented in alphabetical order with brief introductory texts. Each reproduced work is rigorously documented with a caption that, in addition to providing the technical data offers the reader a description of the work for better comprehension. The North American Mosaic has four overarching features. First, it is, to the extent feasible, based on comparable information on the status and trends of major indicators of the state of the environment in Canada,Mexico, and the United States. Second, the report confirms that these three countries together make up an incredibly complex, dynamic, and interconnected ecosystem in which humans play a dominant and decisive role. Third, the report raises important and sometimes disquieting questions concerning the sustainability of some current trends. Finally, the report is a reminder that our economic, social, and physical well-being are utterly dependent on the life-sustaining services provided by nature. This report emphasizes the importance of developing mutually compatible economic, social, and environmental goals and policies across the three-country region.
The number of cultural parks has been steadily increasing in recent years throughout the world. But what is a cultural park? This book provides a detailed answer to this question and sets out the basis for an academic debate that moves beyond the technical narratives that have prevailed to date. It is important to open up the topic to academic scrutiny given that cultural parks are becoming widespread devices being employed by different institutions and social groups to manage and enhance cultural and natural heritage assets and landscapes. The main problem in dealing with this topic is the predominant lack of theory-grounded, critical reflection in the literature about cultural parks. These remain largely conceived as technical instruments deployed by institutions in order to solve an array of problems they must deal with. As cultural parks are generally regarded as positive and constructive tools whose performance is associated with the preservation of heritage, the overcoming of the nature/culture divide, the reinforcing of identity and memory and the strengthening of social cohesion and economic development, this book critically explores these issues through the analysis of the literature on cultural parks. In addition, it provides a novel theoretical conceptualization of cultural parks that is connected with, and underpins, a tentative methodology developed for their empirical analysis.
We live in and from nature, but the way we have evolved of doing this is about to destroy us. Capitalism and its by-products - imperialism, war, neoliberal globalization, racism, poverty and the destruction of community - are all playing a part in the destruction of our ecosystem. Only now are we beginning to realise the depth of the crisis and the kind of transformation which will have to occur to ensure our survival. This second, thoroughly updated, edition of The Enemy of Nature speaks to this new environmental awareness. Joel Kovel argues against claims that we can achieve a better environment through the current Western 'way of being'. By suggesting a radical new way forward, a new kind of 'ecosocialism', Joel Kovel offers real hope and vision for a more sustainable future.
