The aim of this book is to stimulate debate by offering a critique of discourse about African music. Who writes about African music, how, and why? What assumptions and prejudices influence the presentation of ethnographic data? Even the term "African music" suggests there is an agreed-upon meaning, but African music signifies differently to different people. This book also poses the question then, "What is African music?" A major source for England’s folklore heritage and vernacular culture is found in the Folklore Column in the periodical Notes and Queries which ran from 1849 to 1947. Previously, to locate material meant using each of the 15 General Indexes in turn. Instead, this book presents, for the first time, a consolidated index to the contents not only of the Folklore Column, but to other material of interest. Besides the index to Folklore entries itself with some 5,450 references alone, presented here are indexes to Nursery Rhymes, Phrases, Proverbs, Rhymes, Riddles, Songs and Ballads (1,722 titles are mentioned), Provincialisms, and Dialects. Overall, the Subject Indexes here contain in total 12,168 references. As such, this book presents the reader with ready access to a neglected corpus of material.
Lexicography and the OED: Pioneers in the Untrodden Forest sets out to explore the pioneering endeavours in both lexicography and lexicology which led to the making of the first English dictionary published by Oxford. Deliberately conceived as a new departure in English lexicography, the first OED, as James Murray stressed, was to be founded on an unequivocal return to first principles, both in the nature of its construction and in the evidence amassed for its compilation. It also produced, as this book shows, a host of problems: on the nature of Englishness, correctness, and general standards of language use, as well as in aspects of pronunciation, semantics, and syntax. Often making use of previously unpublished archive material, this collection of twelve essays provides both a range of perspectives from which the dictionary can be approached, and also explores the particular problems posed by the attempt to realize the pioneering acts of lexicography integral to the making of the dictionary.
