Excerpt from Notes of My Life: 1805-1878 I make no apology for publishing "Notes of my Life." Contemporary biography is allow able, and may be useful when it is Autobiography; but hardly, I think, otherwise. If it is said that Autobiography betrays an over weening self-conceit, the answer to this is the facts of the case. The conflict between the Church and the World is a perpetual conflict, admitting of no armistice. In the end, the Church finally overcomes the World, under Him Who is her Lord and Master, her Example, her Hope, her Peace. "These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have Peace. In the World ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the World." (St. John xvi. 33.) Meantime, in proportion to faithfulness or unfaithfulness, particular Churches overcome the World, or are overcome by the World. Again, sometimes the conflict, as respects a particular Church, assumes a definite and comprehensive character, and arrives at a distinct and decided issue within the limits of a single life. My own life supplies an instance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
