Excerpt from Notes of My Journey Round the World It needs some apology to add one more book to the library already published about journeys round the world; and could I not plead the excuse of having been persuaded to stray from the commendable paths of 'masterly inactivity, ' it certainly would have never been written. But this is not intended to be a volume of thrilling adventures or of tales profusely drawing upon the imagination; it is rather a volume of fact, briefly describing things as they exist, and its aim (if not too great a presumption) is to hint at just so much information as may entice the reader into following up any fancy in some larger work. Excerpt from Daily Notes of a Trip Around the World The notes about India were written in India; every reference to the sea on ships - the writing was done every day as the journey progressed, and sent back to the newspaper Of which I was editor and publisher, as my part Of the daily work. The journey actually began October 26, 1905, and ended March 10, 1906; but travel letters never grow Old, if reason ably well done in the first place. The many commendations mine have received have resulted in this new edition. Original publication was in two volumes, usually objectionable to readers, and this fault has been over come by careful revision. Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Excerpt from A Year of Travel: Random Notes of a Trip Around the World-June, 1911 to June 1912 Having read these letters with keen interest and a deep appreciation of their value, we, to whom they are addressed, have prevailed upon the traveler to allow them to be put in this permanent form, that others might enter with us into the added pleasure of a second and third reading. Excerpt from A Trip Round the World in 1887-8 It is important on all American lines of railway to secure sleeping-car berths the day before starting on the journey - they are generally crowded. I know no bed of little ease to compare with a night spent in the ordinary American car. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In 1790, Xavier de Maistre was 27 years old, and a soldier in the army of the Sardinian Kingdom, which covered swathes of modern-day Northern Italy and Southern France. He was placed under house-arrest in Turin for fighting an illegal duel. It was during the 42 days of his confinement here that he wrote the manuscript that would become Voyage autour de ma chambre. Inspired by the works of Laurence Sterne, with their digressive and colloquial style, de Maistre decided to make the most of his sentence by recording an exploration of the room as a travel journal. de Maistre’s book imbues the tour of his chamber with great mythology and grand scale. As he wanders the few steps that it takes to circumnavigate the space, his mind spins off into the ether. It parodies the travel journals of the eighteenth-century (such as A Voyage Around the World by Louis de Bougainville, 1771), and could be read today as an early take on the modern vogue for “psychogeography” — each tiny thing that he encounters sends de Maistre into rhapsodies, and mundane journeys become magnificent voyages.
Excerpt from Impressions of a Journey Round the World: Including India, Burmah and Japan I have not a little hesitation in committing to print anything so modest as the enclosed rough notes of a voyage round the world, the more so because from its title the reader may not unreasonably suppose that he is about to peruse a record of stirring incidents and exciting adventures.
