Informs Knox that he expects to set sail today, but is unfortunately feeling so ill that I can scersly [scarcely] write, or do any thing else - having an extreme bad cold - Sends news of mutual acquaintances that are also travelling. Notes that Henry Jackson promised to send Knox a more detailed report from Vose regarding the pattent, or the Waldo patent, Knox's lands in present-day Maine. Stamped Boston.
Written from Watertown, likely in Massachusetts. Was prepared to travel eastward after his return from New York, but has been unable to find passage on a vessel. Boston Harbor is frozen over, so decided to travel by land in a sleigh with Captain Ludwig, a representative in the General Court from Waldosborough. It has taken longer than expected for the General Court to approve of a tax, so they have been unable to leave as yet, but it looks like they will be able to leave tomorrow. Reports that Captain Hall is feeling better from his Rheumatic disorder and might join Vose in his agency in six months, if necessary. Has signed the articles in agreement with Knox to work as his agent, but has several questions about parts of the articles which he would like Knox to address.

Writes that he was somewhat alarmed not to receive a letter from Knox, but believes that if he were dangerously ill, Knox's brother or someone else would send word to him. Therefore assumes that business or a visit from friends prevented his writing. Is enclosing Knox's agreement with Mr. [Thomas] Vose, who has now gone eastward, presumably to Knox's property in Maine. Writes that Mr. Hall will join Vose on the return trip.
Announces the dissolution of the partnership between himself and Thomas Vose.

Informs Knox he enclosed a survey from Mr. [Noah] Miller. Also informs him he hired Mr. [James] Malcom to survey the [Waldo patent] land. Discusses the progress of the survey work, marking the road, and laying out the township. Mentions he was planning on sending him potatoes but they were small and watery.

Secretary of War Knox informs Captain Vose that he is in Boston to make arrangements for giving the people upon the patent their deeds according to our agreement. Informs Vose, who helped manage business on Knox's Maine lands, that he will visit the patent the following year.
Instructs Vose to always notify General [Henry] Jackson beforehand if he intends to draw money. Notes both he and Jackson need to know the amount and purpose of the draw. Informs Vose he plans on visiting St. George, Maine in May and expects the house (likely Montpelier) to be completed. Notes a number of fruit trees are being shipped to Vose and provides planting instructions for the trees. Also mentions his desire to have the ice house completed and stocked. Sends his love to Vose's family. The edge on the first page and the upper right corner on the last page of the letter is damaged causing minor text loss.
