The North Field 87 Rapid Runway Repair Test, conducted at North Field SC, was a concurrent Developmental Test and Evaluation (DT & E) and Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT & E) of four Rapid Runway Repair system. The DT & E portion of the test consisted of a Folded Fiberglass Mat Test and an Upheaval Measurement Test. The Folded Fiberglass Mat Test evaluated the performance of a folded fiberglass mat under aircraft trafficking. Two explosively formed craters were repaired with polyester folded fiberglass mats and trafficked with a maximum of 110 combined F-15 and F-16 aircraft passes. One mat was instrumented to record mat and anchor bolt loads during aircraft trafficking. Instrumentation results are reported in Volume II. Mat anchoring, hinge orientation, and mat reaction to jet blast were also examined. The upheaval measurement test evaluated three methods of determining upheaval. The standard stringline, modified stringline, and Dipstick pavement profiler were evaluated for speed and accuracy. The IOT & E tests, including the Hand-Mixed Polymer Spall Repair Test and the Minimum Operating Strip Marking Test, were conducted by the United States Air Force Tactical Air Warfare Center. (sdw).
As part of the USAF's program for developing systems and procedures to rapidly repair bomb-damaged runways, the Air force Engineering and Services Center conducted the North Field '87 Rapid Runway Test. This volume of the North Field '87 Test Report documents the design and installation of an instrumentation system to monitor mat response to F-15 and F-16 aircraft ground operations; data acquisition, processing, and reduction, finite-element modelling of the mat system; a comparison of predicted and actual mat response; and anchoring system reliability study. Keywords: Anchor bolts, Bolt loads, Bow waves, Rapid runway repair, Instrumentation, Mat strain, Shear stress, Strain gages, Fiberglass mats. (KR).
This report describes instrumentation used during Rapid Runway Repair (RRR) tests with a C-141B and C-5A at RAF Wethersfield during October 1-21, 1985. The RRR test objectives were to validate the Precast Concrete Slab (PCS) and Fiberglass Mat (FGM) repairs for use with strategic airlift aircraft, to collect data on the performance of the two repair types under sustained airlift trafficking, to determine necessary modifications to the repair methods to support sustained airlift aircraft operations, and to provide additional data for the (TAXIG) HAVE BOUNCE Program.
