Excerpt from Ninth Biennial Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the State of Iowa, 1899-1900 I had also planned to investigate fully to what extent ordinary business pursuits are followed on the first day of the week, com mouly called Sunday. And which is described in the Code, section 5040, as Breach of Sabbath, but reasons given in the preceding paragraph prevented the inquiry in this case as well. The con ducting of business on Sunday is an injustice to the employes who are thus compelled to forego one day's rest each week, and a wrong to the business man who faithfully observes the Sabbath, giving him one day less of business each week than the man who transacts business seven days in the week. The reasons for Sabbath observance are so obvious that I need hardly say more on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Seventh Biennial Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1910 It is believed that the statistical features of this report are more complete and accurate than ever, and their importance as a basic source of information with reference to general labor conditions in Washington cannot be overestimated. Statistics have been compiled relating to practically all lines of labor employed in the state, and by comparison with reports of former years it is quite apparent that wage-earners are as uniformly employed and well paid as at any previous time since Washing ton was admitted to statehood. On the other hand, it will be observed from the chapter dealing with the cost of living that prices of food commodities exhibit a steady upward tendency, this being. Particularly true of a large list of staple articles which enter into common household use in all families. From all the facts assembled as the results of investigations by this bureau, and from reports of labor organizations, it is quite evi dent that wages have failed to keep pace with advanced living ex penses. Some method of adjusting this unsatisfactory situa tion is a crying necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics: For the Year Ending January 1, 1880 This report for 1879 will contain three parts: 1. An account of the origin and work of the Bureau. 2. Agriculture, its inducements to the unemployed. 3. Wages, earnings and employment of skilled and unskilled labor. And these three parts will form a prelude to next year's report. It is not to be expected that, in the less than five months' existence of the bureau, a very extended, complete, and satisfactory array of facts and evidence could be gathered; and still more would it be im possible when all the perplexities and embarrassments of the work are considered. Next year's investigations and labors, however, will cover almost every ground of practical interest to the industrial welfare of the State. And even now we are in the possession of material, which, when compiled with other corroborative data, will make the Second Annual Report one of value and general interest.
