“A must read for all students of the financial markets . . . clear insight and spirited good humor [backed] up with cold hard facts.” —Seth Klarman, President, The Baupost Group LLC The seductive elegance of classical finance theory is powerful, yet value investing requires that we reject both the precepts of modern portfolio theory (MPT) and pretty much all of its tools and techniques. In this important new book, highly respected and controversial value investor and behavioral analyst James Montier explains how value investing is the only tried and tested method of delivering sustainable long-term returns. He shows you why everything you learnt at business school is wrong; how to think properly about valuation and risk; how to avoid the dangers of growth investing; how to be a contrarian; how to short stocks; how to avoid value traps; and how to hedge ignorance using cheap insurance. Value Investing provides the tools to start thinking in a different fashion about the way in which you invest, introducing ways of overriding the emotional distractions that bedevil the pursuit of a value approach and ultimately thinking and acting differently from the herd. “A leading light in value investing and behavioral finance . . . shows you what’s wrong with standard investment thinking and offers important insight into how to improve your process.” —Michael J. Mauboussin, Chief Investment Strategist at Legg Mason Capital Management, and author of Think Twice: Harnessing the Power of Counterintuition
The first complete biography of the Baltimore Orioles' Hall of Fame baseman Brooks Robinson, the greatest defensive third baseman of all time. Finalist for the 2014 Casey Award! Selected by the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the 2014 author's series Brooks Robinson is one of baseball's most transcendent and revered players. He won a record sixteen straight Gold Gloves at third base, led one of the best teams of the era, and is often cited as the greatest fielder in baseball history. Credited with almost single-handedly winning the 1970 World Series, this MVP was immortalized in a Normal Rockwell painting. A wholesome player and role model, Brooks honored the game of baseball not only with his play but with his class and character off the field. Author of The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych, Doug Wilson returns to baseball's Golden Age to detail the birth of a new franchise through the man who came to symbolize it as one of baseball's most beloved players. Through numerous interviews with people from every part of the legendary player's life, Wilson reveals never-before-reported information to illuminate Brooks's remarkable skill and warm personality. Brooks takes readers back to an era when players fought for low-paying yearly contracts, spanning the turbulent 60s and 70s and into the dawning of the free agent era. He was elected to the MLB All-Century Team and as president of the MLB Players Alumni, Brooks continues to influence today's baseball players. In the climate of astronomic salaries, steroids, off-field troubles, and heroes who let down their fans, Brooks reminds baseball fans of the honor and glory at the heart of America's favorite pastime.
His image is everything, his hormones are raging, and common sense is nowhere to be found. Combine that with his eccentric and ultraconservative family, and the stage is set for a comedic fall from grace that promises to not disappoint. The Fall of Two Moons is a fictional memoir of Steve McConnell's coming of age that will have readers begging for more uproarious and heartwarming stories. It's 1984 in the small coastal town of Portside, and Steve must juggle his ever-restless and troubled peers with his role in the conservative McConnell house, while concealing the ultimate caper from his gregarious father, the school principal. It is not an easy task living in the shadow of his seemingly perfect sister, appeasing his religiously fanatic mother, or sharing a room with his newly adopted Down syndrome brother and classmate, Andy. Steve keeps his growingly agitated father at bay from his behavioral shortcomings, his mother in the dark regarding his sexual awakening, and his peers entertained with his antics in this wildly funny tale of family, friends, and folly. Nicknamed Two Moons following an unfortunate accident of indecent exposure, Steve must stave off ridicule and bodily harm from the upper classmen and school bullies. When these same bullies are wrongfully accused of the crime Steve and his friends are responsible for, he must navigate through a web of deception that becomes increasingly tangled. Steve tries to accept his new brother, embrace his family's idiosyncrasies, and make peace with himself. He winds up in a race with time to prove his maturity to his first girlfriend, keep his friends, evade the authorities, and make amends with those left in his wake as his worlds collide in epic proportion.
It was the mid 1970's when the African-American couple, Mr. Bill and Miss Julie looked over the neighborhood, decided there were enough ten year old boys for a Little League Baseball team, and with the help of their friend Mr. Pensfeld, recruited enough boys for a team. As the story unfolds, Mr. Bill coaches with the help of his friend Mr. Pensfeld and his wife becomes the self appointed cheer leader. As each reader progresses through this book, the integrity, honesty and love exhibited by Mr. BIll and Miss Julie will be indelibly imprinted upon their memory. Readers will enjoy the little nuances of coaching that are incorporated into the story and which improve the player's skills as the Little League season progresses. Mr. Bill, prior to coaching this team, has had a stroke and his left side doesn't work very well. The bond between the boys and their coach increases as they take turns helping him move around or bring him a folding chair to sit on while they practice. Although the team loses at first, under Mr. Bills tutelage and Miss Julie's encouragement they eventually win more than just games. The story near the end evokes extreme emotion, but ultimately demonstrates the love between Mr. Bill, Miss Julie and the boys. Although based upon the personalities of an actual African-American couple, the story line of the book is fiction. Whether you are nine or ninety, the book MR. BILL AND MISS JULIE will be an inspiring, fun read!
Written as if it were a memoir by the author's son Andrew about his first season playing baseball.
