My dissertation presents a critical discourse analysis of news media reporting of three specific altercation events during the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protest in 2016. The DAPL Protest is known globally as a grassroots movement occurring in response to the construction of a 1,172-mile long pipeline across the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. Initially led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the DAPL protest movement centered on the concerns that tribal lands would be destroyed during construction and that the region's water supply would be contaminated. Although the tribe's protest of the project began in 2014, it was largely kept out of mainstream news media. It wasn't until the fall of 2016, when reports of physical confrontations surfaced, that the ongoing protest made national headlines. While several studies have analyzed the quantitative patterns of this news coverage, only a few studies have taken a qualitative look at the actual content of the news reports. My project intends to fill this gap by examining how these altercation events and the actors involved are characterized by journalists and presented to the public. To do so, I draw on tools and methods of Critical Discourse Analysis and Systemic Functional Linguistics, specifically Transitivity analysis and Appraisal Theory.
In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Often when Native nations assert their treaty rights and sovereignty, they are confronted with a backlash from their neighbors, who are fearful of losing control of the natural resources. Yet, when both groups are faced with an outside threat to their common environment—such as mines, dams, or an oil pipeline—these communities have unexpectedly joined together to protect the resources. Some regions of the United States with the most intense conflicts were transformed into areas with the deepest cooperation between tribes and local farmers, ranchers, and fishers to defend sacred land and water. Unlikely Alliances explores this evolution from conflict to cooperation through place-based case studies in the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin, Northern Plains, and Great Lakes regions during the 1970s through the 2010s. These case studies suggest that a deep love of place can begin to overcome even the bitterest divides.

Why have so many central and inner cities in Europe, North America and Australia been so radically revamped in the last three decades, converting urban decay into new chic? Will the process continue in the twenty-first century or has it ended? What does this mean for the people who live there? Can they do anything about it? This book challenges conventional wisdom, which holds gentrification to be the simple outcome of new middle-class tastes and a demand for urban living.
