A fundamental step towards gaining a deeper understanding of our world is to increase the resolution of the investigative instruments we use; i.e. to increase the energy, and hence to decrease the wavelength, of the particles which constitute our probes. Almost any substantial progress in our understanding of the fundamental laws of Nature has been obtained when a new generation of accelerators has allowed us to achieve a new energy range. The new results have generated new questions, thus encouraging us to construct new machines to reach even higher energy levels. The relative energy gain from one generation of accelerators to the next is progressively increasing. The energy ga in suggested by the theoretical predictions at the time has usually been much greater than the value allowed by our technical capabilities. But this smaller energy gain permitted by accelerator technology improvement has generally been sufficient up until now to bring about a substantial increase in our knowledge. Hence a large increase in accelerator energy is very important, and we know that this result can essentially be obtained by developing some new device or some new approach.
This Seminar has been organized in Erice, in the frame of the Eloisatron project activities, with the special purpose of bringing together an interdisciplinary group of distinguished physicists with prominent interest in the development of the accelerators. Listening to the invited lectures, examining the new topics and reviewing ideas for the acceleration of particles to energies beyond those attainable in machines whose construction is under way or is now contemplated are all important moments of this Seminar that will offer to the Italian Physicists a very important opening over the scenario of the accelerators. In connection with the Eloisatron project developments future Workshop-Seminars are now envisioned, each one aimed to a very specific topic in the field of the particle accelerators. The present volume is based on the proceedings of the 12th Workshop of the INFN ELOISATRON Project, held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture (EMCSC), Erice (frapani), Sicily, Italy, in the period September 15-20, 1990. The proceedings deal with the presentation of "New Technologies for Supercolliders". Three new energy frontiers (16,40 and 200 TeV) are now opened up for the future of Subnuclear Physics. Basic problems above the Fermi-energy are crowding up: but no one knows the energy levels needed for their solution. This is why the technology for experiments with the new generation of Supercolliders needs to be pursued having in mind the problems which are of common interest in the three energy frontiers. The primary purpose of the Workshop was to contribute towards the highest energy limit in the search for new instruments and new technologies. Furthermore, the present status and performances of various detector technologies were reviewed. The possible options for a powerful apparatus whose goal would be the discovery of the top, Higgs and SUSY particles in a very high energy, high rate environment, were finally analysed. The Workshop was sponsored by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Italian Ministry of Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research and the Sicilian Regional Government. The second course of the International School on Physics with Low Energy Antiprotons was held in Erice, Sicily at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, from May 20 to May 31, 1987. The School is dedicated to physics accessible to experiments using low energy antiprotons, especially in view of operation of the LEAR facility at CERN with the upgraded antiproton source AAC (Antiproton Accumulator AA and Antiproton Collector ACOL). The first course in 1986 covered topics related to fundamental symmetries. This book contains the proceedings of the second course which focused on spectroscopy of light and heavy quarks. These proceedings contain both the tutorial lectures and contri butions presented by participants during the School. The papers are organized in four sections: The first section includes theoretical reviews. Section II contains experimental reviews and covers the results in meson spectroscopy from DM2, MARK III, GAMS and n-WA76. Section III presents the new meson spectroscopy experiments in pre paration at CERN and Fermilab: Crystal Barrel, OBELIX, Jetset and E760. Section IV is dedicated to LEAR and to future facilities where meson spectroscopy would be a principal component of the physics programme. We should like to thank Dr. Alberto Gabriele and the staff of the Ettore Majorana Centre who provided for a smooth running of the School and a very pleasant stay. For ten days at the end of September, 1987, a group of about 75 scientists from 21 different countries gathered in a restored monastery on a 750 meter high piece of rock jutting out of the Mediterranean Sea to discuss the simulation of the transport of electrons and photons using Monte Carlo techniques. When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.

The third annual International Industrialization Symposium on the SuperCollider, IISSC-held March 13-15, 1991, in Atlanta, Ga.-was an enormous success. The number of attendees, exhibitors, and representatives from foreign countries surpassed the totals of previous years. There were 740 attendees, representing more than 2 dozen universities and colleges, 32 states, 9 national labs, 6 research centers, several government entities at the local, state, and federal level, 182 businesses & industry and 14 countries. More than 100 exhibits, sponsored by 85 organizations, added to the excitement. "Getting Down to Business" was the theme of this year's Symposium. The fact that the Superconducting SuperCollider (SSC) is indeed underway was the message delivered by the Symposium's keynote speaker, Dr. Roy Schwitters, and expanded upon by the opening plenary speakers. The project is moving from the planning stage to actual construction, to development and procurement of equipment, and to resolution of the technical issues involved in advancing the state-of-the-art in areas such as theory, controls, systems, metallurgy, quality control, management, cryogenics, power systems, detectors, interagency cooperation and funding. Plenary speakers included: Paul Gilbert, Chairman of Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc.
