This symposium focused on new superconductors, electronics, magnet technology, energy and new applications. Recent discoveries in HTc, with transition temperatures over 90 K, have spawned a search for practical new applications. These applications extend from current uses such as that of the medical MRI to future applications, represented by research on new high-temperature materials. They span from microcircuit applications to the proposed SMES and fusion reactor applications.
This Conference is designed to cover the entire field of current-carrying properties of superconductors, either metallic alloys or the new high-Tc metallic oxides. Related topics will be treated as well as the large scale applications. Topics covered include magnetization and flux behaviour, current transport and critical currents, Josephson junctions and proximity effect, microwave absorption and rf surface resistance, thermal conductivity and specific heat, Hall effect and thermoelectric power, thermal fluctuations and paraconductivity, applications of high-Tc materials.
This Symposium aims to present and discuss recent advances on the experimental, theoretical and applications aspects of superconductivity. It provides a forum for scientists working on superconductivity to interact and solve mutual problems. All invited papers are by leading experts in the field.
This proceedings contains the works of both experimental and theoretical aspects of high temperature superconductivity with special emphasis on the results obtained by nuclear methods (e.g. neutron scattering, μSR, positron annihilation and Mössbauer spectroscopy).
The subject of the School is on the theory and phenomenology of 'classical' superconductivity. However, the selection and treatment of the different topics is done in the perspective of the new, 'high Tc'' materials, in order to clarify what is already contained in the BCS frame, and what is not.

The Oregon Convention Center, Portland, Oregon, was the venue for the 1997 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. John Barclay, of the University of Victoria, and David Smathers, of Cabot Performance Materials, were conference chairmen. Portland is the home of Northwest Natural Gas, a pioneer in the use of liquid natural gas, and Portland State University, where cryogenic research has long been conducted. The program consisted of 350 CEC papers, considerable more than CEC-95. This was the largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 263 papers are published here, in Volume 43 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Once again the volume is published in two books. CEC PAPER REVIEW PROCESS Since 1954 Advances in Cryogenic Engineering has been the archival publication of papers presented at the biennial CEC!ICMC conferences. The publication includes invited, unsolicited, and government sponsored research papers in the research areas of cryogenic engineering and applications. All of the papers published must (1) be presented at the conference, (2) pass the peer review process, and (3) report previously unpublished theoretical studies, reviews, or advances in cryogenic engineering.
The authors begin this book with a systematic overview of superconductivity, superconducting materials, magnetic levitation, and superconducting magnetic levitation - the prerequisites to understand the latter part of the book - that forms a solid foundation for further study in High Temperature Superconducting Magnetic Levitation (HTS Maglev). This book presents our research progress on HTS Maglev at Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASCLab) of Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), China, with an emphasis on the findings that led to the world‘s first manned HTS Maglev test vehicle "Century". The book provides a detailed description on our previous work at ASCLab including the designing of the HTS Maglev test and measurement method as well as the apparatus, building "Century", developing the HTS Maglev numerical simulation system, and making new progress on HTS Maglev. The final parts of this book discuss research and prototyping efforts at ASCLab in several adjacent fi elds including HTS Maglev bearing, Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) and HTS maglev launch technology.
